Jeffrey T. Miller
Jeffrey Timo Miller (born January 14, 1943) is a senior United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. Education and career Born in New York City, Miller received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1964 and a Juris Doctor from the UCLA School of Law in 1967. Miller was a deputy state attorney general of California from 1968 to 1987. He was a judge on the San Diego County Superior Court from 1987 to 1997. Federal judicial service On January 7, 1997, Miller was nominated by President Bill Clinton to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of California vacated by Gordon Thompson Jr. Miller was confirmed by the United States Senate on May 23, 1997, and received his commission on May 27, 1997. Senior Status
Senior status is a form of semi-retirement for United States federal judges. To qualify, a judge in the Federal judiciary of the United States, federal court system must be at least 65 years old, and the sum of the judge's age and years of service as a federal judge must be at least 80 years. As long as senior judges carry at least a 25 percent caseload or meet other criteria for activity, they remain entitled to maintain a staffed office and chambers, including a secretary and their normal complement of law clerks, and they continue to receive annual cost-of-living increases. Senior judges vacate their seats on the bench, and the President of the United States, president may appoint new full-time judges to fill those seats. Some U.S. states have similar systems for senior judges. Michael Zucchet
Michael J. Zucchet (born December 24, 1969) is an American Democratic politician, a former member of the San Diego City Council, and a former Deputy Mayor of San Diego. In 2005, he briefly served as the Acting Mayor of San Diego. Early life and career Zucchet earned a bachelor's degree in Business Economics and Environmental Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a master's degree in Environmental Economics and Policy from Duke University. He worked as a renewable energy economist with the Energy Information Administration of the United States Department of Energy in Washington, DC, then returned to San Diego in 1996 to work as a City Council aide to councilmember Valerie Stallings.
