Jef Colruyt
Jozef Maria Damiaan "Jef", Baron Colruyt (born 18 October 1958, Halle) is a Belgian businessman. In 1994 he succeeded his father Jo Colruyt as head of Colruyt, a company with more than 26,000 employees. With an estimated fortune of 2.521 billion euro, he is one of the wealthiest people of Belgium. Career After his studies, Jef Colruyt became a representative at Dexion in 1985, a German company for logistic systems. In 1986 and 1987 he was a representative at Marchal Systems, a company for chemical pumps. In 1987, Jef Colruyt started working in the family business. When his father Jo Colruyt deceased unexpectedly in 1994, Jef Colruyt took over the operational management of the company at 36 years old. Under his leadership, the French market was entered into and new store formulas were developed, such as the local shop OKay, baby specialist DreamBaby, toys and gaming specialist DreamLand and the organic supermarket Bio-Planet. Halle (; french: Hal, ) is a city and municipality of Belgium, in the district (''arrondissement'') Halle-Vilvoorde of the province Flemish Brabant. It is located on the Brussels-Charleroi Canal and on the Flemish side of the language border that separates Flanders and Wallonia. Halle lies on the border between the Flemish plains to the North (thick loam) and the undulating Brabant lands to the South (thinner loam). The city also borders on the Pajottenland to the west. François Jean Baptiste Marie "Franz" Colruyt (14 December 1901, Lembeek - 4 November 1958, Halle) is the founder of the Colruyt family business. Under his leadership, a business in colonial goods evolved into a wholesale business in dry food. Family Franz Colruyt was the second son in a family of 11 children. His father Joseph was a baker and had a store under the church tower of Lembeek (a borough of Halle). After his death, his son Jo Colruyt took over the company. Career Franz Colruyt started working with his father and delivered food to stores and large consumers. In 1928, Franz Colruyt decided to shut down the bakery and start up a wholesale business in colonial goods, such as coffee and spices. Until the war, the wholesale business mainly serves stores around Halle and Tubeke. After WW2, the business booms and new customers are found in and around Brussels. The Colruyt family is a Belgian noble family, belonging to the wealthiest noble houses of Belgium. In three generation they managed to climb to the top of the Belgian economy. History The history starts in 1925 when Franz, a baker in Lembeek, opened his own business. He was the second son in a catholic family of 11 children.
