Franz Colruyt
François Jean Baptiste Marie "Franz" Colruyt (14 December 1901, Lembeek - 4 November 1958, Halle) is the founder of the Colruyt family business. Under his leadership, a business in colonial goods evolved into a wholesale business in dry food. Family Franz Colruyt was the second son in a family of 11 children. His father Joseph was a baker and had a store under the church tower of Lembeek (a borough of Halle). After his death, his son Jo Colruyt took over the company. Career Franz Colruyt started working with his father and delivered food to stores and large consumers. In 1928, Franz Colruyt decided to shut down the bakery and start up a wholesale business in colonial goods, such as coffee and spices. Until the war, the wholesale business mainly serves stores around Halle and Tubeke. After WW2, the business booms and new customers are found in and around Brussels. Lembeek is a village with a population of 7,256 in the municipality of Halle, Belgium, Halle, Belgium. Halle (; french: Hal, ) is a city and municipality of Belgium, in the district (''arrondissement'') Halle-Vilvoorde of the province Flemish Brabant. It is located on the Brussels-Charleroi Canal and on the Flemish side of the language border that separates Flanders and Wallonia. Halle lies on the border between the Flemish plains to the North (thick loam) and the undulating Brabant lands to the South (thinner loam). The city also borders on the Pajottenland to the west. Jo Colruyt
Joseph Alphonse Marie Colruyt (2 August 1928, Uccle - 6 October 1994, Puget-Théniers) was a Belgian business owner. He was the son of Franz Colruyt, founder of the Colruyt company. Under his leadership, the company began the Colruyt retail chain known for its "lowest price" strategy. Career When Colruyt took over the company from his father Franz in 1958, the company was a dry food wholesaler. As it became more expensive to deliver small-volume orders to smaller stores, he opened the first ''Cash & Carry'' (briefly called 'Cash') in Hall in 1964: a self-service formula for independent shop keepers. In the mid-1960s, Jo Colruyt chose to switch to retail and took over the self-service business Verloo in Ixelles/Elsene and launched his lowest prices policy, offering famous brands 10% cheaper. Tubize
Tubize (; nl, Tubeke ) is a city and municipality of Wallonia located in the Belgian province of Walloon Brabant. On January 1, 2006 Tubize had a total population of 22,335. The total area is 32.66 km2 which gives a population density of 684 inhabitants per km2. The municipality includes the districts of Clabecq, Oisquercq, Saintes, and Tubize. Bordering Flanders, the town is home to a minority of Dutch-speakers. Ateliers de Tubize Les Ateliers de Tubize locomotive works was located in Tubize. At least six Tubize locomotives are preserved. One (Tubize 2069) in Belgium, two narrow gauge locomotives (2365 & 2369) in Jokioinen Museum Railways, Finland, and one narrow-gauge ( 2179) in Poland.
