Jeanne-Catherine Van Goethem
Jeanne-Catherine Van Goethem (1720–1776) was a Flemish poet. She was a well known and celebrated poet in her time, and was particularly known for her poem written for the 200th anniversary of the Martyrs of Gorkum. The Flemish or Flemings ( nl, Vlamingen ) are a Germanic ethnic group native to Flanders, Belgium, who speak Dutch. Flemish people make up the majority of Belgians, at about 60%. The Martyrs of Gorkum ( nl, Martelaren van Gorcum) were a group of 19 Dutch Catholic clerics, secular and religious, who were hanged on 9 July 1572 in the town of Brielle by militant Dutch Calvinists during the 16th-century religious wars—specifically, the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule, which developed into the Eighty Years' War.
