Jean-Baptiste Céran-Jérusalémy
Jean-Baptiste Heitarauri Céran-Jérusalémy (4 February 1921 — 15 May 2014) was a French Polynesian politician who served twice as president of the Assembly of French Polynesia. He was a founder of the Democratic Rally of the Tahitian People. Céran-Jérusalémy was born in Papeete. After being dismissed from school, he worked at the public works department, and then the government printing office. During the Second World War he served in the local infantry company, but returned to the printing office after being demobilised in 1944. In 1947 he was a founder, with Pouvanaa a Oopa, of the Democratic Rally of the Tahitian People. He was elected President of the Assembly following the 1953 French Oceanian legislative election. As president, he advocated for French Oceania to become a French Department. He resigned as president in October 1953 after the Assembly rejected a motion for Departmentalisation. Assembly Of French Polynesia
The Assembly of French Polynesia (french: Assemblée de la Polynésie française, Tahitian: Te apo'ora'a rahi o te fenua Mā'ohi) is the unicameral legislature of French Polynesia, an overseas country of the French Republic. It is located at Place Tarahoi in Pape'ete, Tahiti. It was established in its current form in 1996 although a Tahitian Assembly was first created in 1824. It consists of 57 members who are elected by popular vote for five years; the electoral system is based upon proportional representation in six multi-seat constituencies. Every constituency is represented by at least three representatives. Since 2001, the parity bill binds that the number of women matches the number of men elected to the Assembly. The official language of the Assembly is French. The most recent election was held in 2018 and resulted in a victory of the Tapura Huiraatira, which won 38 seats. Walter Grand
Walter Jean Tepuatauonini Grand (29 June 1917—6 July 1983) was a French Polynesian soldier and politician who served as president of the Assembly of French Polynesia from 1955 to 1958. He was the first Tahitian decorated for bravery in the Second World War. Early life and military career Grand was born in Papeete and was the eldest of three children. His father died when he was 5 years old. Recalled during the general mobilization of September 1939, he was demobilized on 11 August 1940, with the rank of master corporal. In September 1940, he enlisted alongside his younger brother William in the French Liberation Army, and became a non-commissioned officer in the Pacific Battalion trained by Captain Félix Broche. Their younger brother Marcel enlisted in the New Zealand Army and campaigned in Papua. Grand took part in all the campaigns of his battalion.
