Jayme Cortez
Jayme Cortez ( Lisbon, September 8th, 1926 - São Paulo, July 4th, 1987) was a Portuguese-born Brazilian comics artist. He is considered one of the most important artists of Brazilian comics. He was born in Portugal and began his career in the Portuguese magazine ''O Mosquito''. He emigrated to Brazil in 1947, and began working with horror and children's comics. In 1959, he founded the Continental publishing house alongside Miguel Penteado, working with important artists such as Rodolfo Zalla, Eugênio Colonnese, Gedeone Malagola, Júlio Shimamoto , Flávio Colin, among others. Júlio Shimamoto
Julio Yoshinobu Shimamoto (born Borborema, May 13th, 1939), better known as Julio Shimamoto or Shima, is a Brazilian comic artist of Japanese descent. He started his career in the 1950s in the superhero comic book ''Capitão 7''. He has worked in almost all comic book publishers in Brazil in 1960s and 1970s, such as La Selva, Taika, Outubro, Ebal, Vecchi, Grafipar, Abril, among many others. His main works are ''Musashi I'' and ''Musashi II'' (2003), about the samurai Miyamoto Musashi, and ''Subs'' (2006). One of the main themes of his comics is the samurai (in fact, Shimamoto claims to be descended from samurai), having made the first story on the subject in Brazil: ''Os Fantasmas do Rincão Maldito'', published in 1961. Prêmio Angelo Agostini (Angelo Agostini Award), sometimes also called Troféu Angelo Agostini (Angelo Agostini Trophy), is the most traditional comics award in Brazil. It was created in 1985 by the Associação dos Quadrinhistas e Caricaturistas do Estado de São Paulo (AQC-ESP), which still organizes the event today. The award's name pays homage to Angelo Agostini, considered at the time the pioneer artist of Brazilian comics. The event also seeks to take place, whenever possible, on Dia do Quadrinho Nacional ("National Comics Day", in January 30), the same date in which, in 1869, the first episode of the Agostini's sequential art series ''As Aventuras de Nhô Quim ou Impressões de Uma Viagem à Corte'' was published. Master of National Comics ( pt-BR, Mestre do Quadrinho Nacional) is one of the categories of Prêmio Angelo Agostini, the most traditional Brazilian award dedicated to comics that has been held since 1985 by Associação dos Quadrinhistas e Caricaturistas do Estado de São Paulo (AQC-ESP). History The "Master of National Comics" category has been part of Prêmio Angelo Agostini since its first edition, in 1985. It is aimed to reward artists who have been dedicated to Brazilian comics for at least 25 years. The four honorees of this first edition were chosen by AQC-ESP board. The following year, the winners were elected by open vote for members of AQC-ESP and comics artists associations from other Brazilian states (and, later, for any interested person, whether comics professionals or readers). Universo HQ
Universo HQ ("Comics Universe") is a Brazilian website about comics and considered the most important Brazilian information source on comics-related news. History Universo HQ was created by Samir Naliato and first aired on January 5, 2000. After six months, he invited the journalist Sidney Gusman to become the website's editor. Gusman also invited Sérgio Codespoti and Marcelo Naranjo to work with them, followed by many different collaborators during the years. The first journalistic highlight to Universo HQ was in 2000, when artist Jerry Robinson had an infarction during a visit to São Paulo. Flavio Colin (Rio de Janeiro, June 22, 1930 - Rio de Janeiro, August 13, 2002) was a Brazilian comic artist and illustrator, considered one of the most important comic artists in Brazil. He began his career in the 1950s with an adaptation for the comic book radio series ''As Aventuras do Anjo'', influenced by Milton Caniff, but began to gain prominence with the development of his own stylized artist style. Gedeone Malagola
Gedeone Malagola (São Paulo, July 7th, 1924 - JundiaÃ, September 15th, 2008) was a Brazilian comics artist and editor. He started his career in the 1940s, drawing for the newspaper A Marmita. He worked for several comic book publishers until he founded his own, Editora Júpiter. His main works were in the 1960s at GEP (Gráfica Editora Penteado), where he created the superheroes Raio Negro (his best-known character), Hydroman and Homem Lua. In the late 1960s, Malagola wrote unofficial stories of the X-Men for GEP (the publisher had the characters' rights in Brazil, but the licensed stories were not enough for the number of pages of the Brazilian magazine, so they asked their artists to create - without Marvel's authorization - stories to fill the space). Eugênio Colonnese
Eugenio Colonnese (Fuscaldo, September 3rd, 1929 - Santo André, August 8th, 2008) was an Italian-born Brazilian comic artist. Son of a Brazilian mother (who is African, Portuguese and Indigenous) and Italian father, Colonnese moved to Argentina as a child, where he began his career in 1949, working for several Argentine magazines. He moved to Brazil in 1964. Three years later, he created the Estúdio D-Arte with Rodolfo Zalla, with whom he produced several comic books for several Brazilian publishers. In 1967, Colonnese created his main characters: Mirza, a Mulher-Vampira ("Mirza, the Vampire Woman") and O Morto do Pântano ("The Swamp Dead"), which, although they have similarities, respectively, to Vampirella and Swamp Thing, were created some years before these characters.Colonnese worked mainly with horror comics, but he also worked with other genres and did illustration for educational and advertising comics.
