Jayess, Mississippi
Jayess is an unincorporated community in Lawrence County, Mississippi, United States. History Jayess was named for J.S. Butterfield, owner of the Butterfield Lumber Company. The Butterfield Company laid down a railroad through Jayess in 1912 to transport timber being harvested in the area to the company's sawmill in Norfield, approximately west of Jayess. J.S. Butterfield's initials were used until the Postal Department changed it in when opened in 1912, to create the name "Jayess.". A post office is still located at the settlement. Both a sawmill and a cotton gin were located in Jayess. A klavern of the Ku Klux Klan was located in Jayess during the early 1960s. The Jayess Baptist Church is located at the settlement. Located west of Jayess is the Boyd-Cothern House, constructed in 1837, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Mississippi House of Representatives is the lower house of the Mississippi Legislature, the lawmaking body of the U.S. state of Mississippi. Clem Nettles
Clem Nettles (October 10, 1930 – January 16, 2018) was an American farmer and politician. Nettles was born in Pike County, Mississippi and graduated from Carters Creek School. Jimmy Devon Boyd (January 9, 1939 – March 7, 2009) was an American singer, musician, and actor known for his 1952 recording of the song "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus". Early years Jimmy Boyd was born in 1939 Mississippi into a musical family, father Leslie Boyd and mother Winnie Boyd. His father, in turn, was from a family of 21 children of musician Bill Boyd. Norfield, Mississippi
Norfield is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, Mississippi, United States. History The community was founded in 1886 as a sawmill town. Norfield's name is a portmanteau of the surnames of Frederick Norwood and John S. Butterfield, who founded the Norwood-Butterfield Lumber Company. The sawmill in Norfield was the first sawmill in the southern United States to use a bandsaw to cut yellow pine. In 1900, the community had a population of 347 and was estimated to have a population of 700 six years later. By 1930, the community had the second-largest population in Lincoln County and had a theater, hotel, and golf course. Norfield is located on the Canadian National Railway. The Norwood-Butterfield Company operated the Natchez, Columbia & Mobile Railroad, a standard gauge logging railroad that ran 30 miles east from Norfield. The railroad operated six locomotives. Area codes 601 and 769 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for central and southern Mississippi, excluding the three counties of the Gulf Coast. Area code 601 was one of the original North American area codes assigned in 1947. Until 1997, it served the entire state of Mississippi. Despite the state's relatively stagnant population growth, 601 was close to exhaustion by the mid-1990s due to the proliferation of cell phones and pagers. In 1997, the far southeastern tip of the state, including Biloxi and the Gulf Coast, was split off as area code 228.
