Jathedar
A jathedar ( pa, ਜੱਥੇਦਾਰ) is a leader of high regard chosen to head and ensure discipline within a jatha, a body of Sikhs. The Jathedar of the Akal Takht is the central head of the Sikhs worldwide, who makes all important decisions after consultation with the jathedars of the other four takhts. The current Jathedar of the Akal Takht is Jagtar Singh Hawara, who was appointed by the Sarbat Khalsa on 10 November 2015. Due to the political imprisonment of Hawara, Dhian Singh Mand appointed by the Sarbat Khalsa and Harpreet Singh appointed by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee have been serving as the acting jathedars. Giani Harpreet Singh
Harpreet Singh (born 1972) is a Sikh preacher who is the current Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee appointed acting jathedar of the Akal Takht since 2018. He has also been serving as the jathedar of Damdama Sahib since 2017. Early life and education Harpreet Singh was born in Giddarbaha, Punjab, to Ranjit Singh, a granthi of a rural gurdwara and Harbhajan Kaur in May 1972. He joined Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee as a preacher in 1997 and two year later he was assigned as the head granthi of Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Muktsar. Singh studied in a government school till class 12 before attending Guru Kashi Gurmat Institute in Talwandi Sabo. After finishing a one year diploma in divinity, he completed a master's degree in comparative religious studies from the Punjabi University in Patiala. Jathedar Of The Akal Takht
The Jathedar of the Akal Takht ( pa, ਜੱਥੇਦਾਰ ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ) is the head of the Akal Takht and head of the Sikhs worldwide. The jathedar has the de facto power as the supreme spokesperson of the Khalsa to summon, trial and sentence any person who identifies as a Sikh from the Akal Takht. The current jathedar is Jagtar Singh Hawara, who was declared by the Sarbat Khalsa on 10 November 2015. Due to the political imprisonment of Hawara, Dhian Singh Mand appointed by the Sarbat Khalsa and Harpreet Singh appointed by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) have been serving as the acting jathedars. Gurbachan Singh ( pa, ਗੁਰਬਚਨ ਸਿੰਘ; born 6 April 1948) is a Sikh preacher who has served as the jathedar of the Akal Takht from 2008 to 2018. Early life Gurbachan Singh was born in village Chakk Baja of Muktsar, Punjab, India on 6 April 1948. He joined Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee as a granthi on 29 February 1972 of Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Muktsar, where he became the head granthi in 1996. Jagtar Singh Hawara
Jagtar Singh Hawara ( pa, ਜਗਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਹਵਾਰਾ; born 16 May 1973) is a Sikh political prisoner and member of Babbar Khalsa who has been serving as the Sarbat Khalsa appointed jathedar of the Akal Takht since 2015. He was convicted as a co-conspirator in the assassination of the 12th chief minister of Punjab, Beant Singh, accused of human rights violation in Punjab. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale
Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale (; born Jarnail Singh Brar; 2 June 1947– 6 June 1984) was a militant leader of the Sikh organization Damdami Taksal. He was not an advocate of Khalistan. "Bhindranwale was not an outspoken supporter of Khalistan, although he often emphasized the separate identity of the Sikhs." Takht (Sikhism)
A takht, or taḵẖata ( pa, ਤਖ਼ਤ) literally means a throne or seat of authority and is a spiritual and temporal centre of Sikhism. There are five Takhts, which are five gurudwaras that have a very special significance for the Sikh community. The first and the most important was established by Guru Hargobind in 1609, 'Akal Takht' (the Throne of the Timeless God) and is just opposite the gate of Harmandir Sahib – The Golden Temple, Amritsar. While the Harmandir Sahib, or Golden Temple, represents Sikh spiritual guidance, the Akal Takht symbolizes the dispensing of justice and temporal activity. It is the highest seat of temporal authority of the Khalsa and the seat of the Sikh religion's earthly authority. Gurdev Singh Kaunke
Gurdev Singh Kaunke ( pa, ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਸਿੰਘ ਕਾਉਂਕੇ; 1949 – 1 January 1993) was a Sikh priest who served as the acting Jathedar of Akal Takht from 1986 to 1993. Early life Gurdev Singh was born in 1949 at village Kaunke Kalan under Jagraon subdivision of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. His father was Gurdial Singh and mother Chand Kaur. Sarbat Khalsa
Sarbat Khalsa (lit. meaning ''all the Khalsa''; Punjabi: ( Gurumukhi)), was a biannual deliberative assembly (on the same lines as a Parliament in a Direct Democracy) of the Sikhs held at Amritsar in Panjab during the 18th century. It literally translates to the "entire Sikh Nation" but as a political institution it refers to the meetings of the Dal Khalsa, Sikh Misls, and the legislature of the Sikh Empire. The first Sarbat Khalsa was called by the tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh before his death in 1708 and the tradition of calling Sarbat Khalsa has continued ever since at times of hardship or conflict. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee ( SGPC; "Supreme Gurdwara Management Committee") is an organization in India responsible for the management of Gurdwaras, Sikh places of worship in states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and the union territory of Chandigarh. SGPC also administers Darbar Sahib in Amritsar. The SGPC is governed by the president of SGPC. Akali Phula Singh
Akali Phula Singh Nihang (born Nihang Singh; 1 January 1761 – 14 March 1823) was an Akali Nihang Sikh leader. He was a saint soldier of the Khalsa Shaheedan Misl and head of the Budha Dal in the early 19th century. He was also a senior general in the Sikh Khalsa Army and commander of the irregular Nihang of the army. He played a role in uniting Sikh misls in Amritsar. He was not afraid of the British who at many times ordered for his arrest but were not successful. During his later years he served for the Sikh Empire as a direct adviser to Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He remained an army general in many famous Sikh battles up until his martyrdom in the battle of Nowshera. Gurbachan Singh Manochahal
Gurbachan Singh Manochahal was a Sikh extremist militant, who founded the Bhindranwale Tiger Force of Khalistan in 1984. Early life Gurbachan Singh was born on 6 June 1954 in the village Manochahal, Tarn Taran district in the Indian state of Punjab to S. Atma Singh and Gurmej Kaur. He served in the Indian Army during his youth. Manochahal was shot in the arm during the 1978 Sikh–Nirankari clashes. After this incident, he had maintained a relationship with Damdami Taksal and became acquainted with other members of the organization, such as Amrik Singh and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
