Janin Store, also known as the Old Janin Store, is a historic commercial building located at 123 North Morgan Avenue in Broussard, Louisiana. Built c.1890 by Francois Janin, the structure is an Italianate style one-and-a-half story frame commercial building. The store was run by Janin family until late 1960s. wit14 photos and three maps. Broussard, Louisiana
Broussard is a city in Lafayette and St. Martin parishes in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 8,197 at the 2010 U.S. census, and 13,417 at the 2020 United States census. Broussard is part of the Lafayette metropolitan statistical area. History The community was originally named ''Côte Gelée'' (Frozen Hill) because of its hilly ridge area and the severe winter of 1784. Broussard was founded in 1884. It was named after Valsin Broussard, a prominent local merchant, who formed the first vigilante committee when his own store was robbed. He was a direct descendant of Joseph Broussard de Beausoleil, one of the first 200 Acadians to arrive in Louisiana on February 27, 1765, aboard the ''Santo Domingo''. Primary agricultural resources include sugarcane, soybean and hay production as well as horse and cattle farming. Italianate Architecture In Louisiana
The Italianate style was a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of Classical architecture. Like Palladianism and Neoclassicism, the Italianate style drew its inspiration from the models and architectural vocabulary of 16th-century Italian Renaissance architecture, synthesising these with picturesque aesthetics. The style of architecture that was thus created, though also characterised as "Neo-Renaissance", was essentially of its own time. "The backward look transforms its object," Siegfried Giedion wrote of historicist architectural styles; "every spectator at every period—at every moment, indeed—inevitably transforms the past according to his own nature." The Italianate style was first developed in Britain in about 1802 by John Nash, with the construction of Cronkhill in Shropshire. Comeaux House
The Comeaux House is a historic house located at 101 East 2nd Street in Broussard, Louisiana. Built in c.1908 by Edmond Comeaux and his wife Cecile St. Julien Comeaux, the house is a Queen Anne-Colonial Revival style residence with semi-octagonal bay at each end of the facade, a semi-octagonal Doric front gallery and a corner turret. The Valsin Broussard House is a historic house located at 408 West Main Street in Broussard, Louisiana. Built c.1876 by Valsin Broussard, founder of the town of Broussard, the house is the oldest remaining residence in the town.
