Janet Petersen
Janet Petersen (born August 1, 1970) is an American politician and a Democratic member of the Iowa Senate representing the 18th District since January 2013. She previously served as the Senate Minority Leader and has previously represented the 64th district in the Iowa House of Representatives between 2001 and 2013. She received her BA from the University of Northern Iowa and her MA from Drake University. Petersen serves on several committees in the Iowa Senate - the Government Oversight, Judiciary, State Government and Ways & Means committees. She also serves as the ranking member of the Commerce Committee. Iowa Senate
The Iowa Senate is the upper house of the Iowa General Assembly, United States. There are 50 seats in the Iowa Senate, representing 50 single-member districts across the state of Iowa with populations of approximately 60,927 per constituency, . Each Senate district is composed of two House districts. The Senate meets at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines. Unlike the lower house, the Iowa House of Representatives, Senators serve four-year terms, with no term limits. Terms are staggered so that half the Senate is up for reelection every two years. Leadership The President of the Senate presides over the body, whose powers include referring bills to committee, recognizing members during debate, and making procedural rulings. Mark D. Smith (born January 5, 1952) is an American politician who has served as a member of the Iowa House of Representatives since 2001. Early life and education Smith was born and raised in Osceola, Iowa. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Graceland College and a Master of Social Work from the University of Iowa. Career Smith works on the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit of Central Iowa and as an adjunct instructor of social work at the University of Iowa. Smith serves on the Commission on Tobacco User Prevention and Control and on the Iowa Comprehensive Health Insurance Board. Prior to serving in the Iowa House of Representatives, Smith served on the Osceola, Iowa, Osceola City Council from 1981 to 1983.
