Janbolat Mamai
Janbolat Mamai ( kk, Жанболат Мамай, also romanized as Zhanbolat Mamay) (born 15 June 1988) is a Kazakh journalist and political activist who serves as the leader of the Democratic Party of Kazakhstan, and was previously the editor of the ''Tribuna'' newspaper. Since his first arrest in 2012, Mamai has become a prominent figure in the Kazakh opposition. Early life and education Mamai was born in the city of Alma-Ata (now Almaty) on June 15, 1988 to a family of teachers. In 2007, he completed an internship at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Mamai then continued his studies at the Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages at the Department of English Philology. Zhanaozen Massacre
The Zhanaozen massacre took place in Kazakhstan's western Mangystau Region over the weekend of 16–17 December 2011. At least 14 protestors were killed by police in the oil town of Zhanaozen as they clashed with police on the country's Independence Day, with unrest spreading to other towns in the oil-rich ''oblys'', or region. According to Amnesty International, the massacre was a stark illustration of the country's poor human rights record under President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Zhanaozen Zhanaozen has been described as "a one-industry town... centered on the ageing oilfield of Ozen". Mukhtar Qabyluly Ablyazov ( kk, Мұхтар Қабылұлы Әблязов, ''Muhtar Qabyluly Ábliazov''; born 16 May 1963) is a Kazakh businessman and political activist who served as chairman of Bank Turan Alem (BTA Bank), and is a co-founder and a leader of the unregistered political party Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan (QDT).
