Jan Salter
Jan Salter MBE was the founder of the Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre (KAT Centre), a charity organisation that works to create a healthy, sustainable street dog population and eliminate rabies in Kathmandu, Nepal. She was also an artist who was widely acclaimed for her portraits of people of Nepal. Early life Salter was born in Southampton, England in 1936. During her younger years, she travelled extensively throughout the world, often finding employment as a hairdresser in the countries she visited. This profession gave her the opportunity to earn income to support her travels. Salter first visited the Himalayan country of Nepal in 1967 as a tourist. She was hired as a hairdresser in Boris Lisanevich's Royal Hotel, one of the first international hotels in the country. The KAT Centre Nepal (Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre) is a nonprofit organization in Nepal. The KAT Centre's goals are to create a healthy, sustainable street dog population, reduce animal cruelty, and eliminate rabies, around Kathmandu, Nepal. The Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre Nepal was first conceived after Jan Salter visited the organization Help in Suffering in Jaipur, India. Impressed with the way this and other animal welfare organizations have managed difficult street dog problems and eliminated rabies through Animal Birth Control (ABC) and widespread rabies vaccinations, Ms. Salter came back to Nepal convinced that Kathmandu can become a rabies-free, dog-friendly city. Free-ranging Urban Dog
Street dogs, known in scientific literature as free-ranging urban dogs, are unconfined dogs that live in cities. They live virtually everywhere where cities exist and the local human population allows, especially in the developing world and the former USSR. Rabies
Rabies is a viral disease that causes encephalitis in humans and other mammals. Early symptoms can include fever and tingling at the site of exposure. These symptoms are followed by one or more of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, fear of water, an inability to move parts of the body, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Once symptoms appear, the result is virtually always death, regardless of treatment. Boris Lisanevich
Boris Nikolayevich Lisanevich (, russian: Борис Николаевич Лисаневич; 1905 –1985) was a ballet dancer, a hotelier and a restaurateur. He helped pave the way for tourism in Nepal, when he opened the country's first hotel, the Hotel Royal, and later when he created the Yak & Yeti Hotel and Restaurant. Early life and ballet career Lisanevich was the youngest of three brothers. His great-grandfather Grigory Ivanovich Lisanevich fought at Borodino and his portrait was placed in the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace. At age 9, Boris entered the Odessa Cadet Academy. Maiti Nepal ( ne, माइती नेपाल) is a non-profit organization in Nepal dedicated to help the victims of human trafficking. Currently, it operates a rehabilitation home in Kathmandu, as well as transit homes at the Indo-Nepal border towns, preventive homes in the countryside and an academy in Kathmandu .
