Jan Cilliers Park
Jan Cilliers Park is a park in Groenkloof, Pretoria, South Africa. The park on the northern slopes of Klapperkop is also known as Protea Park. The park is dedicated to native plants and offers scenic views of the city and the Union Buildings. The park is on the corner of Wenning and Broderick Streets, with the entrance on the latter. The centerpiece of the park is a stream with 14 miniature waterfalls connecting two dams alongside a wide variety of plants. The park also features large lawns interspersed with rockeries, trees, and shrubs. History The park was designed in the 1960s by Harry Bruins-Lich, director of parks in Pretoria from 1942 to 1967, and was named after the Afrikaner poet, Jan F.E. Celliers. Groenkloof (Afrikaans for 'Green ravine') is a residential suburb of Pretoria, South Africa. This wealthy suburb in Pretoria is famous for its white Jacaranda trees. It is close to the city centre, and to the well-known Brooklyn Square and Menlyn Park shopping centres. Klapperkop Nature Reserve
Klapperkop Nature Reserve is a nature reserve of some 460 ha in Pretoria, Gauteng, which was established in 1898. It is managed by the Department of Nature Conservation. Fort Klapperkop, completed in 1897, is situated inside the reserve. The reserve is named for the prominent Klapperkop, a hill (or kopje) vegetated with klapper trees (''Strychnos pungens'') on its northern slopes. Activities It has become popular with cyclists, joggers and sightseers. Self-guided hikes are permitted. Union Buildings
The Union Buildings ( af, Uniegebou) form the official seat of the South African Government and also house the offices of the President of South Africa. The imposing buildings are located in Pretoria, atop Meintjieskop at the northern end of Arcadia, close to historic Church Square and the Voortrekker Monument. The large gardens of the Buildings are nestled between Government Avenue, Vermeulen Street East, Church Street, the R104 and Blackwood Street. Fairview Avenue is a closed road through which only officials can enter the Union Buildings. Though not in the centre of Pretoria, the Union Buildings occupy the highest point of Pretoria, and constitute a South African national heritage site. Blacksmith Lapwing
The blacksmith lapwing or blacksmith plover (''Vanellus armatus'') is a lapwing species that occurs commonly from Kenya through central Tanzania to southern and southwestern Africa. The vernacular name derives from the repeated metallic 'tink, tink, tink' alarm call, which suggests a blacksmith's hammer striking an anvil. Description Blacksmith lapwings are very boldly patterned in black, grey and white, possibly warning colours to predators.
