Jamil Canal
Jamil Canal, a native of Brazil, spent most of his career as a goalkeeper in the American Soccer League. From 1973 to 1975, he was the ASL All Star goalkeeper while playing with the New York Apollo. In 1976, he moved to the expansion Tacoma Tides. However, the Tides folded at the end of the season and Canal moved back to New York where he spent the 1977 season as the backup to Keith Van Eron Keith Van Eron is a retired American soccer goalkeeper who played one season in the American Soccer League and three in the North American Soccer League. In many team sports which involve scoring goals, the goalkeeper (sometimes termed goaltender, netminder, GK, goalie or keeper) is a designated player charged with directly preventing the opposing team from scoring by blocking or intercepting opposing shots on goal. New York Apollo
The New York Greeks was an American soccer club based in New York City that was a member of the American Soccer League. The team began as the amateur Greek-Americans. The club played lower Premier Division of the German American Soccer League which was based in the New York metropolitan area. The team won the Premier Division championship in 1950/51 and was promoted to the upper Major "Big 12" Division for the following season. Following their last place finish in the 1953/54 season, the club was relegated. The team was again promoted to the upper division for the 1960/61 season. The Greek-American Reserves team won the Dr. Manning Challenge Cup in 1954. For the 1964/65 season, the club joined the "super-league" Eastern Professional Soccer Conference. Tacoma Tides
The Tacoma Tides was an American soccer club based in Tacoma, Washington that was a member of the American Soccer League. It began play in 1976, but the league folded the following year. It was owned by businessman and future governor Booth Gardner; among its players was backup goalkeeper Bruce Arena, who later coached several Major League Soccer champions and the United States men's national team. Keith Van Eron
Keith Van Eron is a retired American soccer goalkeeper who played one season in the American Soccer League and three in the North American Soccer League. He also played the first eleven seasons of Major Indoor Soccer League, winning the 1984 championship with the Baltimore Blast. He was the 1986 MISL Goalkeeper of the Year. Player Van Eron attended Hartwick College where he played soccer under Timo Liekoski. He had originally intended to play basketball at Hartwick, but joined the soccer team. He was a 1976 Honorable Mention (third team) All American. In 1977, Van Eron turned professional with the New York Apollo in the American Soccer League. He immediately proved his worth by being named a first team all star. The Apollos sold his contract to the Houston Hurricane, coached by Liekoski, of the North American Soccer League, two games into the 1978 season.
