James Wilfrid Gardiner
James Wilfrid "Wilf" Gardiner (July 27, 1924 – October 3, 2002) was a farmer, civil servant and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Melville from 1956 to 1967 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Liberal. He was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, the son of cabinet minister (and future premier) James Garfield Gardiner and Violet McEwen, and was educated in Regina, in Lemberg, in Ottawa, at Luther College in Regina and at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. In 1946, he married Margaret I. Hudgin. In the same year, he returned to Lemberg, where he began farming; later becoming a general business agent. Gardiner also served as Lemberg's town clerk, as secretary for the local school board and secretary for the Lemberg Rural Telephone Company. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Last Mountain seat in the provincial assembly in 1948 and 1952 before being elected in 1956. Qu'Appelle—Moose Mountain
Qu'Appelle—Moose Mountain was a federal electoral district in Saskatchewan, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1968 to 1988. This riding was created in 1966 from parts of Moose Mountain and Qu'Appelle ridings It consisted of a part of Saskatchewan lying south of the Qu'Appelle River and east of the 2nd meridian. It was abolished in 1987 when it was redistributed into Regina—Qu'Appelle and Souris—Moose Mountain ridings. Regina Northeast
Regina Northeast is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. This district includes the neighbourhoods of Parkridge, Uplands, Glencairn and Glencairn Village. The district was created in 1967 out of parts of Regina North and Regina East. Between 1991 and 1995, this riding was called "Regina Churchill Downs". Kevin Doherty of the Saskatchewan Party won the riding in the general elections of 2011 and 2016, but announced his retirement from politics in the spring of 2018 and resigned the seat. Walter Smishek
Walter Edmund Smishek (July 21, 1925December 22, 2014) was a Polish-born Canadian trade unionist and former political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Regina East from 1964 to 1967 as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member and Regina North East from 1967 to 1982 as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. Early life Smishek was born in 1925 in Sokal, Eastern Galicia, the son of Andrew Joseph Smishek and Mary Homeniuk, and came to Saskatchewan with his parents in 1930, settling on a farm near Hafford. Career Smishek worked for a grocery wholesale firm for five years, then became a representative for the Saskatchewan Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Workers' Union. From 1964 to 1971, he was executive secretary for the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour. He also served as a member of the University of Saskatchewan's Academic Senate representing labour. Bienfait, Saskatchewan
Bienfait is a town in Saskatchewan on Highway 18 that is 14 km (9 miles) east of Estevan. It is 30 km northwest of the town of North Portal, which is next to the Canadian-American border and is also 10 km south of Estevan. It is surrounded by the RM of Coalfields. For services, Bienfait has one school and a gas station. There is also a curling rink and an ice rink, which is where the Bienfait Coalers of the Big 6 Hockey League play. The Coalers have won the Lincoln Trophy 15 times, which is the most of any team. The Bienfait Museum is in the old CPR Station on the east end of town. John Russell Kowalchuk
John Russell Kowalchuk (August 30, 1921 – August 18, 2000) was an educator, businessman, farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Melville from 1967 to 1982 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member. He was born on the family farm near Goodeve, Saskatchewan, the son of Nicholas Kowalchuk, and was educated in Goodeve and at the Regina normal school. Kowalchuk earned a teaching certificate from the University of Saskatchewan by taking correspondence courses. From 1942 to 1956, he taught school in the Melville area. In 1951, he married Emma Amelia Dohms. After 1956, he operated a grocery store, locker plant and insurance business until 1961, when he began farming. He served on the board for the Melville school unit from 1959 to 1967, also serving as board chairman. Last Mountain is a former provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Centered on the town of Strasbourg, it included the northern half of Last Mountain Lake. This constituency was created for the 2nd Saskatchewan general election in 1908.
