James Tuthill
James Joseph Tuthill (born March 25, 1976) is a former American football placekicker in the National Football League for the San Diego Chargers and the Washington Redskins. He played college football at California Polytechnic State University. Early life After graduating from Upland High, Tuthill went on to placekick and punt for Cal Poly, earning second-team All American West Conference selection as a senior. Placekicker
Placekicker, or simply kicker (PK or K), is the player in gridiron football who is responsible for the kicking duties of field goals and extra points. In many cases, the placekicker also serves as the team's kickoff specialist or punter. Specialized role The kicker initially was not a specialized role. Prior to the 1934 standardization of the prolate spheroid shape of the ball, drop kicking was the prevalent method of kicking field goals and conversions, but even after its replacement by place kicking, until the 1960s the kicker almost always doubled at another position on the roster. George Blanda, Lou Groza, Frank Gifford and Paul Hornung are prominent examples of players who were stars at other positions as well as being known for their kicking abilities. When the one-platoon system was abolished in the 1940s, the era of "two-way" players gave way to increased specialization, teams would employ a specialist at the punter or kicker position. The 1994 Cal Poly Mustangs football team represented California Polytechnic State UniversityThe official name of Cal Poly is California Polytechnic State University. However, it has been more commonly known as either Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or just Cal Poly since 1947. during the 1994 NCAA Division I-AA football season. Cal Poly competed in the American West Conference (AWC). The Mustangs were led by first-year head coach Andre Patterson and played home games at Mustang Stadium in San Luis Obispo, California. They finished the season as champion of the AWC, with a record of seven wins and four losses (7–4, 3–0 AWC). The first Division 1 football conference title in Cal Poly history.
