James S. Gorman
James Sedgwick Gorman (December 28, 1850 – May 27, 1923) was a politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. Gorman was born in Lyndon Township, Michigan, near Chelsea. He attended the common schools and the Union School of Chelsea, and graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1876. He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Jackson. He served as assistant prosecuting attorney of Jackson County for two years and moved to Dexter in 1879. Gorman was a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives from 1881 to 1882 and served in the Michigan Senate from 1887 to 1890. In 1890, he defeated incumbent Republican Edward P. Allen to be elected as a Democrat from Michigan's 2nd congressional district to the 52nd Congress He was re-elected to the 53rd, serving from March 4, 1891, to March 3, 1895. Michigan's 2nd Congressional District
Michigan's 2nd congressional district is a United States congressional district in Western Michigan. The current 2nd district contains much of Michigan's old 4th congressional district, and includes all of Manistee, Mason, Lake, Osceola, Clare, Gladwin, Oceana, Newaygo, Mecosta, Isabella, Montcalm, Gratiot, Ionia, and Barry counties, as well as portions of Midland, Wexford, Muskegon, Kent, and Eaton counties. George Spalding
George Spalding (November 12, 1836 – September 13, 1915) was a politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. Biography Spalding was born in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, Scotland and immigrated to the United States in 1843 with his parents. The settled in Buffalo, New York, where he attended the public schools. He later moved to Monroe, Michigan, and taught school in 1860 and 1861. He entered the United States Army on June 20, 1861, as a private in Company A, 4th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and was promoted through the ranks to colonel of the 12th U.S. Tennessee Cavalry. In 1865, Spalding was promoted to brigadier general by brevet to commemorate his wartime service. Spalding was appointed postmaster of Monroe, July 27, 1866, and served until December 15, 1870. He was special agent of the U.S. Treasury Department, serving from 1871 to 1875. He was elected mayor of Monroe in 1876 and served as president of the board of education.
