James Prendergast (Canadian Politician)
James Emile Pierre Prendergast (March 22, 1858 – April 18, 1945) was a lawyer, judge and political figure in Manitoba. He represented La Verendrye from 1885 to 1888 and Woodlands from 1888 to 1892 and St. Boniface from 1892 to 1896 in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Conservative and later Liberal. Biography Prendergast was born in Quebec City, Canada East, the son of James Pierre Prendergast and Emeline Gauvreau, and was educated at Université Laval. Prendergast was called to the Quebec bar in 1881. In 1882, he came to Manitoba, was called to the Manitoba bar in 1883 and practised law in Winnipeg. In 1886, he married Olivina Mondor. He was elected to the Manitoba assembly in an 1885 by-election held after Louis Prud'homme was named a county court judge. Prendergast served in the provincial cabinet as Provincial Secretary. Sir James Prendergast (10 December 1826 – 27 February 1921) was the third Chief Justice of New Zealand. Prendergast was the first Chief Justice to be appointed on the advice of a responsible New Zealand government, but is chiefly noted for his far-reaching decision in ''Wi Parata v The Bishop of Wellington'' in which he described the Treaty of Waitangi as "a simple nullity" Early life Prendergast was born in London, United Kingdom, on 10 December 1826. He was the youngest son of Michael Prendergast QC ( appointed QC 1850) and his wife, Caroline Dawe, the sister of artist George Dawe. James Luke Prendergast
James Luke Prendergast (April 7, 1800 – May 7, 1895) was a merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Conception Bay from 1842 to 1852 and Harbour Grace from 1855 to 1859 and from 1860 to 1861 in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly as a Liberal. He was born in Harbour Grace, the son of James Prendergast, and established himself in business there. Prendergast married Margaret Bransfield in 1825. In an 1840 by-election, he ran for a seat in the Newfoundland assembly as an independent Liberal against Edmund Hanrahan. Following widespread violence during the campaign, the governor Henry Prescott set aside the results of the election. Prendergast was first elected when he ran as a Liberal in 1842. He was defeated when he ran again as an independent Liberal in 1852. He served as acting superintendent of fisheries after he was elected again in 1855 as a Liberal. James Prendergast (March 9, 1764—November 15, 1846) was an American pioneer and politician, an early settler of Chautauqua County, New York, and the first founder and namesake of the city of Jamestown, New York. Biography Early life Prendergast was born on March 9, 1764, in Pawling, New York, a son of William Prendergast, Sr. (1727—1811) and Mehetabel Wing (1738—1812). Among his siblings included Jediah and John, both New York State Senators. After the American Revolution, the Prendergast family, consisting of the children, grandchildren, and servants, traveled to Wheeling, Virginia and then to Louisville, Kentucky, before they arrived in Memphis, Tennessee. Unsatisfied, the family moved to Upper Canada in what is now Ontario. Pioneer James Prendergast settled in the area that became Jamestown, New York.
