James Prendergast (pioneer)
James Prendergast (March 9, 1764—November 15, 1846) was an American pioneer and politician, an early settler of Chautauqua County, New York, and the first founder and namesake of the city of Jamestown, New York. Biography Early life Prendergast was born on March 9, 1764, in Pawling, New York, a son of William Prendergast, Sr. (1727—1811) and Mehetabel Wing (1738—1812). Among his siblings included Jediah and John, both New York State Senators. After the American Revolution, the Prendergast family, consisting of the children, grandchildren, and servants, traveled to Wheeling, Virginia and then to Louisville, Kentucky, before they arrived in Memphis, Tennessee. Unsatisfied, the family moved to Upper Canada in what is now Ontario. Pioneer James Prendergast settled in the area that became Jamestown, New York. Pawling (town), New York
Pawling is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. Its population was 8,012 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Catherine Pauling, the daughter of Henry Beekman, who held the second largest land patent in the county. A misprint caused the U to change to a W and the name stuck. The town is in the southeastern part of the county, and contains a village of the same name. History A part of the town was involved in a boundary problem involving New York and Connecticut. A section of the town, located in the "Oblong"—the name was given to the disputed oblong strip of land, two miles in width forming part of the Eastern boundary of the now Dutchess and Putnam Counties—was settled by Nathan Birdsall and his wife Jane Langdon; they were the first pioneer settlers of Quaker Hill, Dutchess, NY. James Prendergast Library
The James Prendergast Library is an association library located in Jamestown, New York. On the day it opened its doors to the public, December 1, 1891, The Evening Journal noted, "The opening of the Prendergast Library marks an important epoch in our local history. Few communities can boast so magnificent a public gift." The mission of the James Prendergast Library is to provide access to information resources, staff, facilities and services that respond to the pursuit of knowledge, education, lifelong learning opportunities and cultural enrichment by the people of the City of Jamestown and Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties. Abner Hazeltine (June 10, 1793 – December 20, 1879) was a politician from New York. Biography Born in Wardsboro, Vermont, Hazeltine attended the common schools. He graduated from Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, in 1815. He moved to Jamestown, New York, November 2, 1815, where he taught school and was a founder of the Jamestown Academy. He studied law with Jacob Houghton and Samuel A. Brown, was admitted to the bar in 1819 and commenced practice in Chautauqua County, New York. He moved to Warren, Pennsylvania, and was the first lawyer in the county. He returned to Jamestown, New York, and resumed the practice of law in 1823. He also became editorial writer on the ''Jamestown Journal'' 1826-1829. He served as member of the New York State Assembly in 1829 and 1830. Pomfret is a town in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The population was 13.236 at the 2020 census. The town lies in the north-central part of the county, south of Dunkirk, and includes the village of Fredonia. History The area was first settled around 1806.
