James Payne was an English cricketer who played for Lancashire. He made one first-class appearance during the 1898 season, and at least four appearances for the Lancashire Second XI in the same year. Payne was a lower-middle order batsman for the Second XI who played his only first-class match in the tailend. However, he failed to score a run during the match, being caught twice off the bowling of onetime English Test bowler Fred Tate Frederick William Tate (24 July 1867 – 24 February 1943) was an English cricketer who played in one Test in 1902. Early life Payne was born in Leamington Spa on 22 July 1896, the son of Edward Dennis and Annie Payne, his father was a policeman. In 1911 he was described as an auctioneers clerk aged 14. World War I service On 10 July 1915 Sergeant Payne was awarded flight certificate No. 1415 on Maurice Farman Biplane from the Military School in Birmingham. He was originally assigned to No. 41 Squadron RFC on 12 June 1916, but was shipped out on 16 July, joining No. 29 Squadron RFC on 6 August. On 30 October 1916, Acting Sergeant Major Payne was commissioned a second lieutenant on duty with the Royal Flying Corps. He scored his first victory on 12 August 1917, using a Nieuport fighter to destroy a German Albatros D.V near Houthoulst Forest. His string of triumphs would run until 9 January 1918. James Arthur Payne (1894 in Highland Mills, NY – June 12, 1968 in Highland Mills, New York USA) was an American fly rod maker, designer and business owner. The son of E.F. Payne and the owner of the E.F. Payne Rod Company, Payne designed and built bamboo fly rods for almost 70 years. His rods are prized by fishermen and collectors. James Payn (; 28 February 1830 – 25 March 1898) was an English novelist and editor. Among the periodicals he edited were ''Chambers's Journal'' in Edinburgh and the ''Cornhill Magazine'' in London. Family Payn's father, William Payn (1774/1775–1840), was clerk to the Thames Commissioners, and at one time treasurer to the county of Berkshire. Payn was educated at Eton and then entered the Military Academy at Woolwich, but his health was unequal to a military career and he proceeded in 1847 to Trinity College, Cambridge. There he was among the most popular men and served as president of the Union. Before going to Cambridge he had published some verses in Leigh Hunt's Journal, and while still an undergraduate put out a volume of ''Stories from Boccaccio'' in 1852 and one of ''Poems'' in 1853.
