James Miller (VC 1857)
Major James William Miller VC (5 May 1820 – 12 June 1892) was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Details Miller was about 37 years old, and a conductor in the Bengal Ordnance Depot, Bengal Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place on 28 October 1857 near Agra for which he was awarded the VC: The VC award was gazetted on 25 February 1862, after a delay in obtaining the application for the medal from his senior officers. He later achieved the rank of lieutenant, retired from the Gun Carriage Agency on 10 August 1882 as an honorary major, and died in Simla on 12 June 1892. James Miller FRCSEd, FRSE (2 April 1812 – 17 June 1864) was a surgeon and medical author in Edinburgh. He was author of the important 19th century textbook, ''Principles of Surgery''. Like his father he became a member of the Free Church of Scotland in 1843 and was a firm believer in temperance. Life He was born on 2 April 1812 in the manse of Eassie in Angus, the son of Rev James Miller (1777–1860) and Barbara Martin. He studied Medicine at both St Andrews University and Edinburgh University. From 1832 to 1834 he served as assistant to Robert Liston, taking over his practice in 1834. He continued this until 1842 then took up the role of Professor of Surgery at Edinburgh University. At the same time he acted as principal surgeon to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. During this period he lived at 51 Queen Street, a handsome Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh's First New Town. Dr James Young Simpson was his immediate neighbour. James Isaac "J. J." Miller, Jr. (born August 23, 1979) is an American professional basketball player. He played overseas since 2001 and has played in multiple countries, including France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden. Since 2012 he is a Borås Basket player and one of the top players in the Swedish Basketligan. He started his professional career in the Netherlands with Landstede Basketbal in 2001. After that period he played with Brest of the French LNB Pro B and in his home country for the Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs. He also played for the Sundsvall Dragons from 2004 till 2005. James Joy Miller (May 26, 1886 – December 31, 1965) was an American football player. Biography Miller was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1886. His father, James G. Miller, was the secretary of the Union Depot Railroad in Detroit. Miller attended Detroit Central High School where he won varsity letters in football, baseball and basketball. The ''Detroit Free Press'' called him "one of the best known athletes Detroit ever has turned out." Miller was considered one of Detroit's best basketball players on defense and played end for Detroit Central's football team. He is currently a professor of physics, Medicine, and Biomedical Engineering, emeritus, at Washington University in St. Louis, where he holds the Albert G. James Douglas Miller FRSE (20 July 1937 – 23 August 1995) was a Scottish neurosurgeon of international repute. The Douglas Miller Memorial Lecture is named in his honour.
