James Laing (doctor)
James Laing (c.1749–1831) was a Scottish doctor and slave plantation owner in Dominica. Life He was born in the parish of Crimond, c. 1748, the son of Alexander Laing and Jane Henderson.''Scottish Notes and Queries'' 1929, p. 239 According to later testimony, he was resident as a young man in Dominica, by the later 1760s. There were other Scots of the same name in the Caribbean at this period, including Dr James Laing in Tobago, from Elgin, Moray. Laing acquired lands in Scotland, at Haddo-Rattray, Buchan, in 1789. According to the ''Topographical Dictionary of Scotland'' (London, 1846), writing about Crimond, "There is an ancient seat called Haddo, and an elegant modern mansion has been built on the estate of Rattray." James Laing (footballer)
James Higgins Laing (1897 – 23 April 1917) was a Scottish footballer who made one appearance in the Scottish League for Falkirk as an inside right. Personal life Prior to his service in the First World War, Laing worked as an engineer for Carron Company. He attested in the Army on 8 December 1915 and was called up to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in September 1916. James T. Laing is a Canadian sportscaster and radio station owner who spent the 1966-67 NHL season as the radio play by play voice for the Boston Bruins. Broadcasting career A native of Weyburn, Laing's career began in 1962 calling junior hockey games in Saskatchewan. While calling games for the Estevan Bruins, Boston Bruins President Weston Adams heard Laing's play by play on scouting trips. Adams was very impressed with Laing's impartiality, especially in games between Estevan and their rivals, the Weyburn Red Wings. According to Boston Bruins announcer Fred Cusick, Laing "was a dead ringer, in voice and inflection, for Foster Hewitt, Canada's legendary hockey announcer". He was hired by Adams in 1966 to call Bruins games on radio. Laing was 23 years old at the time of his hiring. James Laing (shipbuilder)
Sir James Laing (1823–1901) was a British shipbuilder and founder of James Laing & Sons in Sunderland. Life He was born at Deptford House in Bishopwearmouth (later known as Sunderland) on 11 January 1823 the only son of Philip Laing and Anne Jobling. His father was also a shipbuilder, having founded Laings of Deptford Yard with his brother John Laing (both from Fife) in 1793. Deptford Yard was a satelitte facility linked to Deptford but based in Sunderland. Their first ship the "Horta" had been built on the Harbour Sands near Sunderland. They then formed a shipbuilding yard on a bend on the River Wear. In 1843 James Laing took over the business and renamed it "James Laing & Sons". The company had a strong connection to Duncan Dunbar & Co, building one ship per year for them from 1843 to 1863. Duncan Dunbar continued to build ships but switched builder to Pile, Hay & Co in Sunderland. Laing & Co is credited with the invention of the first oil tanker around 1855. James ...
