James Kerr (Pennsylvania Politician)
James Kerr (October 2, 1851 – October 31, 1908) was a member of the United States House of Representatives and later the Clerk of the United States House of Representatives. Biography Kerr was born in Reedsville, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, October 2, 1851; resided in Blair County until 1864; moved to Clearfield in 1867; pursued an academic course. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1869 to 1871. He was also a justice of the peace in 1878; prothonotary for Clearfield County in 1880 and 1883; engaged in the coal and lumber business; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first Congress (March 4, 1889 – March 3, 1891); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1890; during the Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses was appointed Clerk of the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1891 to March 3, 1895; resumed business interests; died in New York City October 31, 1908; interment in Hillcrest Cemetery, Clearfield, Pennsylvania Clearfi ... The Pennsylvania State Senate is the upper house of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, the Pennsylvania state legislature. The State Senate meets in the State Capitol building in Harrisburg. Senators are elected for four year terms, staggered every two years such that half of the seats are contested at each election. Even numbered seats and odd numbered seats are contested in separate election years. The president pro tempore of the Senate becomes the lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania in the event of the sitting lieutenant governor's removal, resignation or death. Clearfield is a borough and the county seat of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2020 census the population was 5,962 people, making it the second most populous community in Clearfield County, behind DuBois. The borough is part of the DuBois, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area, as well as the larger State College-DuBois, PA Combined Statistical Area. The settled area surrounding the borough consists of the nearby census-designated places of Hyde and Plymptonville, which combined with Clearfield have a population of approximately 8,237 people. Consolidation In October 2015, a Clearfield/Lawrence Township Consolidation Committee first convened to discuss a potential merger between Lawrence Township and Clearfield. However, on August 1, 2017, Lawrence Township supervisors voted 2 to 1 against consolidation with Clearfield. Clearfield County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 80,562. The county seat is Clearfield, and the largest city is DuBois. The county was created in 1804 and later organized in 1822. Clearfield County comprises the DuBois, PA Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the State College-DuBois, PA Combined Statistical Area. History Clearfield County was formed by the Act of Assembly by the second Governor of Pennsylvania at the time, Thomas McKean on March 26, 1804. The county was created from parts of the already created counties of Huntingdon and Lycoming. The name for the county was most likely derived from the many cleared fields of the valleys surrounding Clearfield Creek and West Branch of the Susquehanna River, formed by the bison herds and also by old corn fields of prior Native Americans tribes.
