James Edgar (Jacobite)
James Edgar (13 July 1688 – 24 September 1764) was a Scottish Jacobite official. Biography Edgar was born in Keithock, Forfarshire, the fifth of seven sons of David Edgar, Laird of Keithock Forfarshire and his second wife, Elizabeth Guthrie. Edgar was well-connected; he was the godson of James Maule, 4th Earl of Panmure. In the Jacobite rising of 1715, Edgar was among the first to rally to the raising of the Jacobite standard at Braemar by the Earl of Mar. During the rising he served as clerk to John Hay of Cromlix. After the defeat of the rising, he escaped Scotland in disguise and joined the exiled Jacobites, first in Avignon by late 1716 and then in Rome by 1717. He never returned to Scotland. By the later 1720s he had assumed increased responsibility for correspondence into and out of the Jacobite court, often composing the bulk of a letter's content while James attached a signature and occasionally added a few comments. Sir James David Edgar, (August 10, 1841 – July 31, 1899) was a Canadian politician. In his twenties, Edgar was a law student, legal editor of the ''Toronto Globe'', an alderman on Toronto's city council and an organizer for the Liberal Party in Ontario. He was also rare among English Canadians of the time for his sympathy for the rights of French-Canadians. Edgar was married to Matilda Ridout and together they had nine children. James Edgar (1843 – 1909) was a businessman who has been credited with being the one who first came up with the idea of dressing up as Santa Claus for Christmas. He started the tradition in 1890 in his Brockton, Massachusetts, department store. Biography Edgar was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843. In 1878, he arrived in Brockton, and he eventually set up a dry goods store on Main Street. In 1890, he got the idea to dress up as Santa Claus. Within days, children from as far as Boston and Providence came by train to see Edgar. He initially hung around his department store, but over the years, he was known to walk around the streets of Brockton. James Douglas Edgar
James Douglas Edgar (30 September 1884 – 8 August 1921) was an English professional golfer and golf writer. Early life Edgar was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. He won the French Open in 1914. He coached the young player Tommy Armour, who became a prominent professional after 1920; Armour later praised Edgar as having helped him the most. The legendary Harry Vardon stated that Edgar was on his way to becoming a player who could surpass everyone. Golf career Edgar emigrated to the United States in April 1919, following World War I. He was the head professional at Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta. Edgar played frequently with the young Bobby Jones at the Atlanta Athletic Club (the site of today's East Lake Golf Club) from 1919–1921. He mentored and coached Jones during this period as well. James Edgar (born July 22, 1946) is an American politician who was the 38th governor of Illinois from 1991 to 1999. Previously he served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1976 to 1979 and as Illinois Secretary of State from 1981 to 1991.
