James Couper (astronomer)
James Couper (9 August 1752 – 7 August 1836) was a Scottish astronomer. He was Professor of Astronomy at the University of Glasgow from 1803 to 1836. Life Couper was Professor of Astronomy at the University of Glasgow from 1803 to 1836. He also held other positions within the university including: * Dean of Faculties 1800–1801 * Clerk of Senate from 1810 to 1814, 1820 to 1828 * keeper of the Hunterian Museum (a joint position with his sons) He taught very little Astronomy and abandoned observations because of the increasing smoke and new buildings in the surrounding areas of the observatory. He seemed not to have considered building a new observatory outside the town. Couper was a student at the University of Glasgow and graduated Master of Arts in 1775, and Doctor of Divinity in 1800. James Hamilton Couper (March 5, 1794 – July 3, 1866) was an American planter and slaver who at his peak controlled more than 1,500 slaves.Bagwell, James (2002). After his graduation he returned home, and in 1815 made a voyage to Europe for purposes of study and travel. On his return he became a planter, and in this occupation his life was mostly spent. His plantations attracted the especial notice of travelers, among others of Sir Charles Lyell. He labored, not without success, to improve the cultivation of cotton and rice. The Couper Baronetcy is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 23 June 1841 for George Couper. He was a colonel in the Army and fought in the Peninsular War, served as Military Secretary to the Governor Generals of Canada, Sir James Kempt and Lord Durham, and was Comptroller of the Household and Equerry to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent. The second Baronet was an administrator in India and served as Governor of the North-West Provinces between 1877 and 1882. Another member of the family to gain distinction was James Kempt Couper, second son of the first Baronet. He was a general in the Army. The family surname is pronounced "Cooper". Manganism
Manganism or manganese poisoning is a toxic condition resulting from chronic exposure to manganese. It was first identified in 1837 by James Couper. Signs and symptoms Chronic exposure to excessive manganese levels can lead to a variety of psychiatric and motor disturbances, termed manganism. Generally, exposure to ambient manganese air concentrations in excess of 5 micrograms Mn/m3 can lead to Mn-induced symptoms. In initial stages of manganism, neurological symptoms consist of reduced response speed, irritability, mood changes, and compulsive behaviors. Upon protracted exposure symptoms are more prominent and resemble those of idiopathic Parkinson's disease, as which it is often misdiagnosed, although there are particular differences in both the symptoms; for example, the nature of the tremors, response to drugs such as levodopa, and affected portion of the basal ganglia.
