James Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper (September 15, 1789 – September 14, 1851) was an American writer of the first half of the 19th century, whose historical romances depicting colonist and Indigenous characters from the 17th to the 19th centuries brought him fame and fortune. He lived much of his boyhood and the last fifteen years of life in Cooperstown, New York, which was founded by his father William Cooper (judge), William Cooper on property that he owned. Cooper became a member of the Episcopal Church (United States), Episcopal Church shortly before his death and contributed generously to it. James Cooper (minister)
James Cooper (1846–1922) was a Church of Scotland minister and church historian. In 1917 he attained the highest position in the Church of Scotland as Moderator of the General Assembly. He was a prolific author on religious topics and strong advocate of the reunion of the various schisms of the Scottish church. Life He was born in Elgin on 13 February 1846, the son of John Alexander Cooper (d.1881), a local merchant and former farmer, and his wife, Ann Stephen of Old Keith (d.1909). He studied at Elgin Academy and Aberdeen University, graduating M.A. in 1867. He also spent at least one semester at the University of Heidelberg before being licensed to preach as a Church of Scotland minister by the Presbytery of Elgin. After serving some time as assistant in various parishes, Banchory-Ternan, Stirling and Elgin, he was ordained as minister of St Stephen's Church in Broughty Ferry near Dundee in April 1873. James Cooper (born February 12, 1982) is an American baseball coach and former outfielder. He played college baseball for the Grambling State Tigers from 2001 to 2004 before playing professionally from 2004 to 2006. He then served as head coach of the Grambling State Tigers (2010–2021). Playing career Cooper was an outfielder for Grambling, where he earned All-Conference honors and played under longtime head coach Wilbert Ellis. He was drafted in the 33rd round of the 2004 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. He played two seasons in the Astros system, reaching Class A, and one season of independent baseball in the CanAm League for the Sussex Skyhawks before ending his playing career. James Cooper (1874 in London, Ontario – 1931) was a Canadian bootlegger who gained prosperity through the prohibition era. Cooper became one of the wealthiest and most powerful bootleggers in Canada. Bootlegging Ontario voted for prohibition of alcohol in October 1919. This law lay out that residents were allowed to purchase liquor for private use only. Saloons and bars were closed, and the only way to consume alcohol was in the privacy of the individual’s home. Because Cooper discovered there was nothing to prevent Ontario distilleries from completing any orders not originating in Ontario, he opened an office across the river in Detroit. By taking orders by phone from customers in Windsor, Cooper was allowed to produce and provide alcohol to his customers. James Cooper, a.k.a. "Stick Daddy," was one of several African American artisans associated with the cane carving tradition in coastal Georgia during the early twentieth century. Ethnographers and art historians have seen this tradition as evidence of the persistence of African visual and cultural motifs into North America and modern period. Biography Cooper's birth and death dates are not known. He made a living through miscellaneous jobs and repair services, which he conducted with a push-cart that he rolled through Savannah. He was known also to sell lunches to workers on break from the Savannah Sugar Refinery. While he had never received formal instruction in art making or wood carving, he recalled to New Deal ethnographers that his grandfather had made baskets, chairs, and tables, working in the mediums of carpentry, cane-weaving, and basketry. James Graham Cooper
James Graham Cooper (June 19, 1830 – July 19, 1902) was an American surgeon and naturalist. Cooper was born in New York. He worked for the California Geological Survey (1860–1874) with Josiah Dwight Whitney, William Henry Brewer and Henry Nicholas Bolander. He was primarily a zoologist, but he also made significant botanical collections from San Diego to Fort Mohave, Arizona in 1861. Cooper was active in the California Academy of Sciences, eventually becoming Director of the Museum. He obtained his medical degree in 1851 and practiced in New York City until 1853. Spencer F. Baird, the Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution at that time, helped Cooper work with the Pacific railroad survey parties working in the Washington Territory.
