James Carique-Ponsonby
James Carrique Ponsonby (1738 - December 1796) lso recorded as Carrigue, Carigue, Carique and Carrickwas an Irish member of parliament (MP) for two different constituencies, high sheriff, justice of the peace and grand juror of County Kerry and an important Irish landowner. Biography He was born as James Carrique to Anne Dorothy (née Crosbie) and William Carrique; his mother was the daughter of Lady Margaret Barry and Thomas Crosbie; his father was a lawyer, JP, high sheriff and grand juror, resident at Crotta. He entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1754, aged 16 and is recorded as a JP the following year. Richard Ponsonby, his great uncle who had no children, willed the Crotta estate to his father on 10 February 1762 with the proviso that both father and son take the Ponsonby name. Earl Of Hyndford
Earl of Hyndford was a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1701 for John Carmichael, 2nd Lord Carmichael, Secretary of State from 1696 to 1707. He was made Lord Carmichael and Viscount of Inglisberry and Nemphlar at the same time, also in the Peerage of Scotland. He was the grandson of James Carmichael, who had been created a Baronet, of Westraw in the County of Lanark, in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia in 1627, and raised to the Peerage of Scotland as Lord Carmichael in 1647. The third Earl was a prominent diplomat. The titles became dormant on the death of the sixth Earl in 1817, and were later unsuccessfully claimed by James Carmichael Smyth and his great-grandson James Morse Carmichael. During the 18th century, elements of Enlightenment thinking culminated in the American, French, and Haitian Revolutions. During the century, slave trading and human trafficking expanded across the shores of the Atlantic, while declining in Russia, China, and Korea. Kilflynn
Kilflynn () is a village and a civil parish in north County Kerry, Ireland. It is 11 km north-east of Tralee just off the N69 road from Tralee to Listowel. Etymology The origin of the place name Cill Flainn is unknown. Two suggestions are commonly circulated. ‘Cill’ in Irish can mean 'cell' or 'churchyard' so in context might mean 'church of Flainn.' A popularised tale is that it was named after a Roman Catholic hermit monk, Flainn, said to have lived by the River Shannow (which runs through Kilflynn). Crippled and blind, he was visited by the Virgin Mary, who offered to restore his ailing sight. Flainn declined, asking for the miraculous power to be transferred to others via a local well (now Tobar Flainn, well or spring of Flainn).
