James C. Dever III
James Columcille Dever III (born May 25, 1962) is an American attorney and jurist serving as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. Early life and education Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Dever received a Bachelor of Business Administration with high honors from the University of Notre Dame in 1984 and a Juris Doctor with high honors from Duke University School of Law in 1987. Career Dever was a law clerk to Judge J. Clifford Wallace of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1987 to 1988. He served in the United States Air Force as a member of the General Counsel Honors Program from 1988 to 1992. He continued to serve in the United States Air Force Reserves 1992 to 2000. The United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina (in case citations, E.D.N.C.) is the United States district court that serves the eastern 44 counties in North Carolina. Appeals from the Eastern District of North Carolina are taken to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit (except for patent claims and claims against the U.S. government under the Tucker Act, which are appealed to the Federal Circuit). Roy Asberry Cooper III (born June 13, 1957) is an American attorney and politician, serving as the 75th governor of North Carolina since 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 49th attorney general of North Carolina from 2001 to 2017. He also served in the North Carolina General Assembly in both the House of Representatives (1987–1991) and Senate (1991–2001). Cooper defeated Republican incumbent Pat McCrory for the governorship in a close race in the 2016 election.
