James Browne (born 15 October 1975) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who has served as a Minister of State at the Department of Justice since September 2020. He has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Wexford constituency since 2016. Browne comes from a family of Fianna Fáil politicians. He is the only son of former TD John Browne. His great uncle, Seán Browne, was also a TD. He studied hotel management and catering in Dublin IT before studying law in Waterford IT, University College Cork and King's Inns, where he qualified as a barrister. He was member of Enniscorthy Town Council from 2009 to 2014. He was a member of Wexford County Council from 2014 to 2016. James Browne (died 1677) was a Scottish pirate and privateer active in the Caribbean. He is best known for his hasty execution and its effect on colonial Jamaican government. History Jamaican officials had been working to curb rampant privateering in the region since the tenure of Lieutenant Governor (and former buccaneer) Henry Morgan. To the dismay of English lords eager to find allies in Europe, privateers would regularly abuse their legal commissions to attack shipping of all nations. Using a privateering commission from Governor D’Ogeron of French Tortuga, Browne sailed from Jamaica in October 1676 with a multi-national crew. Early in 1677 he captured the Dutch West Indies Company slaving ship ''Golden Sun'' off Cartagena, killing several of its officers and crew. Sir James Crichton-Browne MD FRS FRSE (29 November 1840 – 31 January 1938) was a leading Scottish psychiatrist, neurologist and eugenicist. He is known for studies on the relationship of mental illness to brain injury and for the development of public health policies in relation to mental health. Crichton-Browne's father was the asylum reformer Dr William A.F. Browne, a prominent member of the Edinburgh Phrenological Society and, from 1838 until 1857, the superintendent of the Crichton Royal at Dumfries where Crichton-Browne spent much of his childhood.
