James Bartleman (singer)
James Bartleman (1769–1821), was an England, English bass singer who performed at the Concerts of Ancient Music and revived the solo songs of Henry Purcell. Life Bartleman was born 19 September 1769. He was educated under Dr. Cooke, of Westminster, and became a chorister in the Westminster Abbey, abbey. He distinguished himself even as a boy singer, and by his gentle, amiable disposition, became a great favourite not only with his master, but also with Sir Sir John Hawkins (author), John Hawkins, whose daughter Laetitia Matilda Hawkins, Laetitia mentions him frequently in her ''Anecdotes'', and always with the highest admiration, both of his talents, but of his character. He made his first appearance as a bass singer in 1788 at the Concerts of Ancient Music, and he kept up his connection with that institution, with only one break, until compelled by ill-health to resign. Charles Knyvett
Charles Knyvett (11 February 1752 – 19 January 1822) was an English singer and organist. He established in 1791 in London the Vocal Concerts, a series of subscription concerts. Life He was born in Westminster, son of Charles Knyvett and his wife Jane née Jordan; he was descended from the family of Knyvet or Knyvett of Fundenhall, Norfolk. He was educated at Westminster School, and was a chorister at Westminster Abbey, under Benjamin Cooke. He was appointed in 1770 joint organist, with William Smethergell, of All Hallows-by-the-Tower. William Crotch
William Crotch (5 July 177529 December 1847) was an English composer and organist. According to the American musicologist Nicholas Temperley, Crotchwas "a child prodigy without parallel in the history of music", and was certainly the most distinguished English musician in his day. Life Childhood William Crotch was born in Norwich, Norfolk, to a master carpenter. Like Mozart, he was a child prodigy, playing the organ his father had built. At the age of two he became a local celebrity by performing for visitors, among them the musician Charles Burney, who wrote an account of his visits for the Royal Society. John Wall Callcott
John Wall Callcott (20 November 1766 – 15 May 1821) was an eminent English composer. Callcott was born in Kensington, London. He was a pupil of Haydn, and is celebrated mainly for his glee compositions and catches. In the best known of his catches he ridiculed Sir John Hawkins' ''History of Music''. Although ill-health prevented Callcott from completing his Musical Dictionary, His ''Musical Grammar'' (1806) remained in use throughout the 19th century. ''The History of Cardenio'', often referred to as simply ''Cardenio'', is a lost play, known to have been performed by the King's Men, a London theatre company, in 1613. The play is attributed to William Shakespeare and John Fletcher in a Stationers' Register entry of 1653. The content of the play is not known, but it was likely to have been based on an episode in Miguel de Cervantes's ''Don Quixote'' involving the character Cardenio, a young man who has been driven mad and lives in the Sierra Morena. Thomas Shelton's translation of the First Part of ''Don Quixote'' was published in 1612 and would thus have been available to the presumed authors of the play. Samuel Harrison (8 September 1760 – 25 June 1812) was an English singer. A tenor, he sang in notable concerts of the day, including the Concerts of Antient Music and the Three Choirs Festival. Early life Harrison was born in Belper, Derbyshire, on 8 September 1760. Burton, a bass singer, was his earliest instructor.
