Jacob Schive
Jakob Schive (29 April 1897 – 12 October 1969) was a Norwegian military officer, geodesist and Milorg pioneer. Career Schive was born in Kristiania, a son of headmaster Jens Christopher Delphin Schive and Jacobæa Berner. He was a military officer from 1918, and graduated from the Norwegian Military College in 1921, in geodesy and mathematics. He was appointed at the Norwegian Mapping and Cadastre Authority from 1921. During the German occupation of Norway he participated in the Norwegian Campaign in 1940. In 1941 he was part of the leadership of Milorg until October, when he moved to London. He served at the Norwegian High Command in London from 1942 to 1945. From 1945 he lectured in topography at the Norwegian Military Academy. In the military ranking system, he was promoted to colonel in 1956. Milorg
Milorg (abbreviation of militær organisasjon – military organization) was the main Norwegian resistance movement during World War II. Resistance work included intelligence gathering, sabotage, supply-missions, raids, espionage, transport of goods imported to the country, release of Norwegian prisoners and escort for citizens fleeing the border to neutral Sweden. History Following the German occupation of Norway in April 1940, Milorg was formed in May 1941 as a way of organizing the various groups that wanted to participate in an internal military resistance. At first, Milorg was not well coordinated with the Special Operations Executive (SOE), the British organization to plan and lead resistance in occupied countries. King's Commendation For Brave Conduct
The Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct, formerly the King's Commendation for Brave Conduct, acknowledged brave acts by both civilians and members of the armed services in both war and peace, for gallantry not in the presence of an enemy. Established by King George VI in 1939, the award was discontinued in 1994 on the institution of the Queen's Commendation for Bravery. It represented the lowest level of bravery award in the British honours system, alongside a mention in despatches. There is no entitlement to post-nominal letters. Norwegian Military Academy
The Norwegian Military Academy (), in Oslo, educates officers of the Norwegian Army and serves as the King's Royal Guard. The academy was established in 1750, and is the oldest institution for higher education in Norway. History The Commander-in-Chief of the Norwegian armed forces, Hans Jacob Arnold Jensen, sent a request to the King of Denmark-Norway in 1750 to establish a school of mathematics in Christiania. The King determined, through the Royal Resolution of 16 December 1750, to establish The Free Mathematical School (). It was the first institution offering higher education in Norway, but it did not give any extensive military education. The students were recruited from the officer corps or from nobles in military service. After a reorganization in 1804, the school became an officer school and an independent unit with its own command. From 1876 to 1880 a college degree was required to apply.
