John Geddes (c. 1925 – August 28, 2017) was a Canadian curler. He played as third on the 1958 Brier-winning Team Alberta, skipped by Matt Baldwin. Milestone, Saskatchewan
Milestone is a town in southeast Saskatchewan, Canada, on Saskatchewan Highway 39. The town was named after C. W. Milestone (superintendent of the New Soo Line) in 1893. The town serves as a service centre for the neighbouring countryside with the area's economy dominated by agriculture. Three churches offer services; Milestone United Church, Milestone St. Aloysius Catholic Church and Milestone Alliance Church. The Tim Hortons Brier, or simply (and more commonly) the Brier (''french: Le Brier''), is the annual Canadian men's curling championship, sanctioned by Curling Canada. The current event name refers to its main sponsor, the Tim Hortons coffee and donut shop chain. "Brier" originally referred to a brand of tobacco sold by the event's first sponsor, the Macdonald Tobacco Company. The Brier has been held since 1927, traditionally during the month of March. The winner of the Brier goes on to represent Canada at the World Curling Championships of the same year. 1958 Macdonald Brier
The 1958 Macdonald Brier, the Canadian men's national curling championship, was held from March 3 to 7, 1958 at Victoria Memorial Arena in Victoria, British Columbia. A total of 36,000 fans attended the event. Both Team Alberta and Team Manitoba finished round robin play tied for first with 8-2 records, necessitating a tiebreaker playoff for the Brier championship between the two teams. Alberta, who was skipped by Matt Baldwin won the Brier Tankard for the second year in a row as they defeated Manitoba 10–6 in the tiebreaker game. This was Alberta's seventh Brier championship and the third time Baldwin had won the Brier as a skip, which tied Ken Watson for the most Brier championships as a skip. Matt Baldwin
Mathew Martyn Baldwin, CM (born May 3, 1926) is a Canadian curler from Edmonton, Alberta. Curling Baldwin is a three-time Brier champion, having skipped his rink to the Canadian men's championship in 1954, 1957 and 1958. In 1954, Baldwin and his team of Glenn Gray, Pete Ferry and Jim Collins finished with a 9-1 record to claim their first Brier. At age 27, Baldwin was then the youngest skip to win a Brier, in an era when teams were generally led by men decades older. He is also remembered for pleasing a cheering Edmonton hometown crowd by sliding halfway down the sheet of ice when throwing his final rock of the event, a move that was legal under the curling rules of the time. The age record has since been broken; Kerry Burtnyk is the current holder of the mark. As of the 2013 event Baldwin is the oldest surviving Brier champion skip.
