Jabez Bacon House
The Jabez Bacon House is a historic house on Hollow Road in Woodbury, Connecticut. Built in 1760 for a prominent regional merchant, it is a well-preserved example of Georgian architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Description and history ThJabez Bacon Housestands near the southern end of Woodbury's main village, on the north side of Hollow Road between Sycamore and Main Streets. It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a dormered gambrel roof, central chimney, and clapboarded exterior. It is five bays wide, with a slightly overhanging second story. The front entry is centered, with a reproduction surround consisting of flanking pilasters and a pedimented gable above. The three roof dormers also exhibit full pediments. United States Route 6
U.S. Route 6 (US 6), also called the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, honoring the American Civil War veterans association, is a main route of the U.S. Highway system. While it currently runs east-northeast from Bishop, California, to Provincetown, Massachusetts, the route has been modified several times. The highway's longest-lasting routing, from 1936 to 1964, had its western terminus at Long Beach, California. During this time, US 6 was the longest highway in the country. In 1964, the state of California renumbered its highways, and most of the route within California was transferred to other highways. This dropped the highway's length below that of US 20, making it the second-longest U.S. Highway in the country. Woodbury is a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,723 at the 2020 census. The town center, comprising the adjacent villages of Woodbury and North Woodbury, is designated by the U.S. Census Bureau as the Woodbury Center census-designated place (CDP). Woodbury was founded in 1673. The center of Woodbury is distinctive because, unlike many New England towns, it is not nucleated. In Woodbury, the older buildings are arrayed in linear fashion along both sides of a road that stretches for over a mile. Collis Potter Huntington
Collis Potter Huntington (October 22, 1821 – August 13, 1900) was an American industrialist and railway magnate. He was one of the Big Four of western railroading (along with Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins, and Charles Crocker) who invested in Theodore Judah's idea to build the Central Pacific Railroad as part of the first U.S. transcontinental railroad. Huntington helped lead and develop other major interstate lines, such as the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O), which he was recruited to help complete. The C&O, completed in 1873, fulfilled a long-held dream of Virginians of a rail link from the James River at Richmond to the Ohio River Valley. The Glebe House is a historic house museum at 49 Hollow Road in Woodbury, Connecticut. Built about 1740, it is a prominent local example of Georgian colonial architecture. It is also important as the site of the first Episcopal Church election in the United States. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. It is open for regular tours between May and October, and by appointment.
