RIM-162 ESSM
The RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) is a development of the RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missile used to protect ships from attacking missiles and aircraft. ESSM is designed to counter supersonic maneuvering anti-ship missiles. ESSM also has the ability to be "quad-packed" in the Mark 41 Vertical Launch System, allowing up to four ESSMs to be carried in a single cell. Design The original Sea Sparrow was an expedient design intended to provide short-range defensive fire in a system that could be deployed as rapidly as possible. The AIM-7 Sparrow was the simplest solution as its radar guidance allowed it to be fired head-on at targets and this guidance was easily provided by mounting an aircraft radar on a trainable platform. In the years after its introduction, it was upgraded to follow improvements being made in the air-to-air Sparrow models used by the US Navy and US Air Force. The ultimate version in this line of weapons was the R model, which introduced a new dual-seeker homing s ...

Ballistic Missile Defense
Missile defense is a system, weapon, or technology involved in the detection, tracking, interception, and also the destruction of attacking missiles. Conceived as a defense against nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), its application has broadened to include shorter-ranged non-nuclear tactical and theater missiles. China, France, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, Russia, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States have all developed such air defense systems. Missile defense categories Missile defense can be divided into categories based on various characteristics: type/range of missile intercepted, the trajectory phase where the intercept occurs, and whether intercepted inside or outside the Earth's atmosphere: Type/range of missile intercepted These types/ranges include strategic, theater and tactical. Each entails unique requirements for intercept, and a defensive system capable of intercepting one missile type frequently cannot intercept others. H ...

JS Ōnami
is the second vessel of the s of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). Design The hull design is generally based on the one of the ''Murasame'' class. However, as a part of weapons was changed, the internal structure has also been changed. And it was said that the large lattice mast was degrading its stealthiness in the ''Murasame'' class, so in this class, it was considered to change to two small masts, but it was not implemented. Although its displacement become slightly increased, there is no change in its main engines, as it is not a big difference that has little effect on the performance of the ship. Construction and career ''Ōnami'' was authorized under the Medium-term Defense Buildup Plan of 1996, and was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyards in Nagasaki. She was laid down on 17 May 2000, launched on 20 September 2001. She was commissioned into service on 13 March 2003. and was initially assigned to the JMSDF Escort Flotilla 1 based at Yokosuka. ...

JDS Hiei
JS ''Hiei'' (DDH-142) was the second ship of the ''Haruna''-class helicopter destroyer of the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force. Overview These ships were Japan's first helicopter-equipped destroyer (DDH), and their greatest feature was that it can carry and operate three helicopters in spite of its 5000t class. Such ships, including the development-improved ''Shirane''-class destroyer, can be said to be the only one in the world to this day, and strongly reflect Japan's special military ideology. In terms of equipment, it was the first self-defense ship to be equipped with a fin stabilizer to stabilize its attitude during helicopter operation, and a landing restraint device (bear trap) was installed to improve the safety and efficiency of flight work on a swaying ship. Until the introduction of the ''Kongō''-class destroyer ( Aegis ship), this class (including the ''Shirane''-class destroyer) were the largest escort ship of the JMSDF.
