J.J. Valberg
Jerome J. Valberg (born 1936) is a retired American-British philosopher, and former Senior Lecturer of Philosophy at University College London. In 1966, Valberg received his doctorate from the University of Chicago with his dissertation, "Agency: Some Metaphysical Questions Concerning Human Action". He briefly taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Chicago before arriving at University College London, where he devoted the majority of his academic career. Primarily working in the fields of epistemology and metaphysics, Valberg's writings are also concerned with consciousness, identity, and the problems of perception. Consciousness
Consciousness, at its simplest, is sentience and awareness of internal and external existence. However, the lack of definitions has led to millennia of analyses, explanations and debates by philosophers, theologians, linguisticians, and scientists. Opinions differ about what exactly needs to be studied or even considered consciousness. In some explanations, it is synonymous with the mind, and at other times, an aspect of mind. Identity (philosophy)
In philosophy, identity (from , "sameness") is the relation each thing bears only to itself. Perception
Perception () is the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the presented information or environment. Personal Horizon
In his book ''Dream, Death and the Self'', J. J. Valberg develops the concept of the personal horizon. He attempts to bring out his subject-matter by considering the dream hypothesis – what if ''this'' were a dream? In Valberg's view, an undetermined horizon would necessarily be internalised (a.k.a. subconscious) if ''this'' were all a dream. This leads to "horizonal" conceptions of consciousness, mind, experience, life, the self, etc. Valberg subsequently considers death, and argues that when the meaning of death strikes us in the right way, it presents us with the prospect of nothingness – not there being nothing ''for me'', but nothing ''period''. This corresponds to one's personal horizon being the ''pre-eminent'' one, corresponding to a weak version of solipsism (arguably closely related to Hare's egocentric presentism).
