The J. J. Atkins, registered as the T.J. Smith Stakes, is a Brisbane Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-olds run at set weights over a distance of 1600 metres at Eagle Farm Racecourse, Brisbane in June during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. Total prizemoney is A$1,000,000. Due to track reconstruction of Eagle Farm Racecourse for the 2014–15 racing season the event was transferred to Doomben Racecourse. History The race was long considered the premier two-year-old race of the Brisbane Winter Carnival. It has been renamed several times since its inaugural running as The Claret Stakes. In 1999 the race name was renamed after legendary trainer T.J. Smith. In 2013 the race was once again renamed to honour Queensland trainer Jim Atkins who won every major staying race in the Brisbane area except a QTC Oaks - a race in which he had seven minor placegetters. Eagle Farm Racecourse
Eagle Farm Racecourse is a heritage-listed horse racing venue in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located at the northern end of Racecourse Road in the suburb of Ascot, from the Brisbane central business district. The turf track is wide, with a circumference of and a home straight of . Races are run in a clockwise direction. Doomben Racecourse is located nearby in the same suburb. History The Eagle Farm Racecourse was established in 1863 and it is now the premier racecourse in Brisbane. In 1889–1890, the architecture partnership Hunter and Corrie and architect John H. Group races, also known as Pattern races, or Graded races in some jurisdictions, are the highest level of races in Thoroughbred horse racing. Luskin Star
Luskin Star (1974-2002) was a Thoroughbred racehorse and winner of the Australian two-year-old Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing. Breeding The colt by Kaoru Star out of Promising (NZ) was consigned to the 1976 Sydney Easter Yearling Sales as Lot 734, but was passed in for $6,500 with a reserve of $8,000. He was later purchased by Newcastle trainer Max Lees for stable clients Mr and Mrs John Balcomb, Don Ninnes and Barry Barnett. His sire Kaoru Star was a son of Star Kingdom and grandson of Hyperion. Promising, the dam of Luskin Star, was bred in New Zealand and imported to Australia where she won two minor races at Newcastle and Wyong. Her sire Idomeneo is by the well-bred stallion Alycidon.
