The Italian Tennis Championships ( it, Campionati italiani assoluti di tennis) also known as the Italian National Championships are the national championships in tennis, organised every year by the Federazione Italiana Tennis (FIT) from 1895 to 2004 and in 2020. Not disputed for 15 editions from 2005 to 2019, its come back in 2020. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including wheelchair users. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as lawn tennis. Gianni Cucelli
Giovanni Cucelli (born as Giovanni Kucel) (13 November 1916 – 29 April 1977) was an Italian tennis player. He played Davis Cup for Italy and formed a great doubles partnership with Marcello Del Bello. Because of World War 2, Cucelli was 30 by the time he made his Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon in 1947, where he lost in the third round to Jack Kramer. At Roland Garros (held just after Wimbledon) Cucelli beat veteran Jack Crawford and Robert Abdesselam before losing to defending champion Marcel Bernard in five sets in the quarter-finals. At Roland Garros in 1948, Cucelli beat a young Frank Sedgman before losing to Frank Parker in the quarter finals. Vanni Canepele
Pier Giovanni "Vanni" Canepele (18 June 1916 – 8 July 1983) was an Italian tennis player. A native of Bologna, Canepele was a three-time national singles champion. He made the singles third round at Wimbledon twice and played for the Italy Davis Cup team from 1937 to 1939, then again in 1949. During the 1950s and 1960s, Canepele served several stints as non-playing captain of Italy in the Davis Cup. This included runner-up finishes in 1960 and 1961, both times to Australia. Canepele played a season of Serie A basketball for Virtus Bologna in 1938-1939. Ferruccio "Illo" Quintavalle (1914–1998) was an Italian engineer and tennis player. Biography A native of Milan, Quintavalle was most active in the 1930s, when he won six national championships in doubles. He played for the Italy Davis Cup team as a doubles specialist from 1934 to 1938, usually partnering Valentino Taroni. In 1949 he was non-playing captain of the Davis Cup side which reached the Inter-Zonal final. Quintavalle was general manager of Bianchi and founded automobile manufacturer Autobianchi. Noted engineer Ercole Marelli was his uncle's father-in-law. Valentino Taroni
Valentino Taroni (1915–1997) was an Italian tennis player. Born in 1915, Taroni grew up in the town of Carate Urio on the shores of Lake Como. From a working class family, Taroni's humble beginnings were a contrast to the top Italian player's of the time, who were largely upper class. In order to pursue the sport he had to receive financial help from a member of a Como tennis club, where he was a ball boy. Taroni competed for the Italy Davis Cup team between 1933 and 1939, primarily as a doubles specialist. Augusto Rado
Augusto Rado (21 November 1912 – 8 October 1996) was an Italian tennis player. An Italian junior champion from Milan, Rado was a lightly built player, known for his speed on court. Rado competed during the 1930s, with appearances for the Italy Davis Cup team in 1933 and 1934. His 1933 Davis Cup rubbers were in doubles only, then in 1934 he took the spot of Uberto De Morpurgo and featured in six singles rubbers, of which he won three. He made the singles third round of the 1935 French Championships, losing to Don Turnbull. Giovanni Palmieri (tennis)
Giovanni Palmieri (11 October 1906 – unknown) was an Italian tennis player who was active during the 1930s. Career Amateur Palmieri took part in the Wimbledon Championships editions of 1932 and 1935. In 1932 he competed in the singles event and lost in the first round. With Winifred Beamish he played in the mixed doubles event and reached the second round. In 1935 he defeated Hideo Nishimura and Cam Malfroy to reach the third round of the singles event in which he lost to seventh-seeded Roderich Menzel in straight sets. He teamed up with Valentino Taroni in the doubles event and were defeated in the first round. At the French Championships he competed in the singles event from 1932 to 1934. Emanuele Sertorio
Emanuele Sertorio (1902 – 26 April 1991) was an Italian tennis player of the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Genoa, Sertorio was associated with the Juventus Tennis Club in Turin and won the singles title at the 1928 Italian national championships. In 1933 he became the first local player to claim the Italian International Championships and defeated Frenchman André Martin-Legeay in the final, having earlier beaten Franjo Punčec. He was a Davis Cup player for Italy in 1932 and 1934, securing two doubles wins.
