Iosif Tolchanov
Iosif Tolchanov (russian: link=no, Иосиф Толчанов) was a Soviet actor. Honored Artist of the USSR (1962). Biography Iosif was born on 11 May 1891 in Moscow. From 1911 to 1914 he studied at the University of Liège in France, after which he entered the Mamonov Studio in Moscow. In 1918 he became a member of the Vakhtangov studio. In 1920 he began teaching, he worked in an Uzbek theater studio, in the Yakutsk GITIS studio, in the Shchukin Theater School. ''Aelita'' (russian: Аэли́та, ), also known as ''Aelita: Queen of Mars'', is a 1924 Soviet silent film, silent science fiction film directed by Yakov Protazanov and produced at the Gorky Film Studio, Mezhrabpom-Rus film studio. It was based on Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy, Alexei Tolstoy's 1923 Aelita (novel), novel of the same name. Nikolai Tseretelli and Valentina Kuindzhi were cast in leading roles. Though the main focus of the story are the daily lives of a small group of people during the post-war Soviet Union, the film's enduring importance comes from its early sci-fi elements. It primarily tells of an engineer Mstislav Sergeyevich Los (russian: Лось) traveling to Mars in a rocket ship, where he leads a popular uprising against the ruling group of Elders, with the support of Queen Aelita who has fallen in love with him after watching him through a telescope. ''The Tailor from Torzhok'' (russian: Закройщик из Торжка, Zakroyshchik iz Torzhka) is a 1925 Soviet silent comedy film directed by Yakov Protazanov and starring Igor Ilyinsky. The picture was commissioned as publicity for the State Lottery Loan. Plot The film takes place in Soviet Russia during the NEP in a small provincial town. Petya Petelkin is a humble tailor of a sewing workshop belonging to the widow Shirinkina. The widow decides to marry her employee and Petya buys a lottery ticket hoping to win so that he can present her with a fancy gift. He wins the big prize, starts dreaming of having his own shop, but the winning ticket disappears and passes from hand to hand. This is the beginning of a series of comic adventures. Petya is on the verge of committing suicide, but eventually everything ends well.
