International Chiba Ekiden
The International Chiba Ekiden was an annual team road running competition held in Chiba, Japan in late November. The marathon relay race, or ekiden as it is known in Japan, is one of the prominent annual races of its kind. The competition is split into six legs which combine to make up the marathon distance of 42.195 km. The Chiba Ekiden was first held in 1988 and featured separate competitions for both men and women. Since 2007, each competing country selects three men and three women for their team. The legs are divided as follows: 5 km (men), 5 km (women), 10 km (men), 5 km (women), 10 km (men), and 7.195 km (women). The men's world record for the event was set at the competition in 2005 as the Kenyan team of Josephat Ndambiri, Martin Mathathi, Daniel Mwangi, Mekubo Mogusu, Onesmus Nyerere and John Kariuki completed the course in a time of 1:57:06. John Kariuki (born 10 November 1986) is a Kenyan former long-distance runner. At the age of 14 he emigrated to Japan, where he attended Shiga Gakuen High School. After graduating from school, he started competing professionally for the Toyota Boshoku team. Evelyne Kemunto Kimwei
Everline Kemunto Kimwei (born 25 August 1987) is a Kenyan long-distance runner. Her greatest achievement was a team gold medal at the 2007 IAAF World Road Running Championships, where she was sixth. She is joint-holder of the African record for the ekiden marathon relay, courtesy of her winning run for Kenya at the 2006 Chiba Ekiden. Kimwei won a team silver medal as a junior at the 2004 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. She holds the world junior bests for the 15K and 20K distances, with times of 47:39 minutes and 65:04 minutes, respectively. Both these marks were achieved at the 2006 Kobe Women's Half Marathon, which she won. Kimwei was based in Japan for much of her teenage life and was highly successful there. Cyrus Gichobi Njui (born 11 February 1986) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specialises in road running competitions. Njui initially competed in the steeplechase and the 10,000 metres. He moved to Japan at a young age and studied at Ryutsu Keizai University. In 2006 he won the Sapporo Half Marathon (running for Nissan Motors) and was part of the winning Kenyan team at the International Chiba Ekiden. In 2010 he won both the Sapporo Half Marathon and the Hokkaido Marathon, recording a time of 2:11:22 hours at the latter event (the second fastest in the history of the race). Sammy Korir (born December 12, 1971) is a long distance runner from Kenya. Biography Korir was born in Kiboswa village, Nandi county of Rift Valley province, Kenya. Gideon Lekumok Ngatuny (born 10 October 1986) is a Kenyan long-distance runner. At the 2007 World Cross Country Championships he finished fourth in the senior race, while the Kenyan team of which Ngatuny was a part won the team competition. Ngatuny won the 2008 Kenyan World Cross trials, and at the 2008 World Cross Country Championships he finished seventh individually and won another team gold medal. He won the 2009 Sapporo Half Marathon title with a time of 1:00:39. He is from Kilgoris, but trains at the Gusii Stadium located in Kisii. Philes Moora Ongori (born 19 July 1986 in Chironge, Kiamokama, in Kisii District) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in half marathon and marathon events. Her early career was based in Japan and she won a number of All-Japan Corporate titles for the Hokuren team. She ran the 10,000 metres for Kenya at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics, but came to prominence in the half marathon in 2008 when she won the Kagawa Marugame Half Marathon in the fastest time of the year.
