Indian Creek (Big Piney River)
Indian Creek is a stream in Texas County, Missouri. It is a tributary of the Big Piney River. The stream source is south of Missouri Route 17 west of Yukon. It flows west-northwest passing under U. S. Route 63 south of Houston and enters the Big Piney southwest of Houston. Indian Creek took its name from an old Shawnee Indian settlement near its course. Texas County, Missouri
Texas County is a county located in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,487. Its county seat is Houston. The county was organized in 1843 as Ashley County, changing its name in 1845 to Texas, after the Republic of Texas. The 2010 U.S. Census indicates that the county was the center of population for the United States. History Texas County was created in 1843 and named for William H. Ashley, the first lieutenant governor of Missouri. It was later organized on February 14, 1845, when it was also renamed for the Republic of Texas. A stream is a continuous body of surface water flowing within the bed and banks of a channel. Missouri Route 17
Route 17 is a highway in central and southern Missouri. Its northern terminus is at U.S. Route 54 in Eugene, which is six miles (10 km) northeast of Eldon; its southern terminus is at the Arkansas state line where it continues into Arkansas as Highway 395. Between Waynesville and east of Laquey, part of the road was historic U.S. Route 66. Shawnee
The Shawnee are an Algonquian-speaking indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands. In the 17th century they lived in Pennsylvania, and in the 18th century they were in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, with some bands in Kentucky and Alabama. By the 19th century, they were forcibly removed to Missouri, Kansas, Texas, and ultimately Indian Territory, which became Oklahoma under the 1830 Indian Removal Act.
