Illinois Public Media
Illinois Public Media, previously "WILL AM-FM-TV", is a not-for-profit organization located within the College of Media at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, which is responsible for the university's public broadcasting, public media service activities. It manages three university educational broadcasting stations city of license, licensed to Urbana, Illinois, United States: NPR member stations WILL (AM), WILL (580 AM) and WILL-FM (90.9 FM), and PBS member station WILL-TV (VHF digital channel 9, virtual channel 12). Illinois Public Media provides locally produced programs to supplement the network programs carried by its stations. In addition, it manages the Illinois Radio Reader Service, a streaming audio service for the reading impaired. The National Association of Educational Broadcasters (NAEB) was a US organization of broadcasters with aims to share or coordinate educational programmes. ''The Daily Illini'', commonly known as the ''DI'', is a student-run newspaper that has been published for the community of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign since 1871. Weekday circulation during fall and spring semesters is 7,000; copies are distributed free at more than 100 locations throughout Champaign–Urbana. The paper is published by Illini Media Company (IMC), a not-for-profit corporation which owns several other student-run media outlets, and also operates WPGU 107.1 FM, a student-run commercial radio station. While the IMC has no official ties to the university, university professors and others in the academic community serve on its board of directors. WPGU
WPGU (107.1 FM) is a fully commercial, student-run college radio station on the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, Illinois. It broadcasts an alternative rock radio format and other programming throughout Champaign-Urbana and surrounding communities. It is owned independently from the university by the Illini Media Company. WPGU has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 3,000 watts. The transmitter is atop the Tower at Third apartment complex on South 3rd Street in Champaign. History Early years WPGU is named for the "Parade Ground Units", where the station was originally located on the university campus. The units were Quonset huts, used to house soldiers returning from World War II, while getting training at the university. The Illini Media Company is a nonprofit, student media company based in Champaign, Illinois. The company owns several student-run media outlets associated with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign: the general newspaper, the ''Daily Illini''; the entertainment paper, ''Buzz Magazine''; the engineering quarterly, '' Technograph''; the U of I yearbook, the '' Illio''; and the commercial radio station, WPGU. The Illini Publishing Company was chartered by the State of Illinois in 1911. In 1984, it became the Illini Media Company. The company helps students prepare for and careers in print media and broadcasting and to inform and entertain the University of Illinois community. Revenues exceed $2.5 million. WILL-TV (channel 12) is a PBS member television station licensed to Urbana, Illinois, United States, serving the Central Illinois region.
