IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech And Audio Processing Award
The IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award is a Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers#Technical field awards, Technical Field Award presented by the IEEE for an outstanding contribution to the advancement of speech and/or audio signal processing. It may be presented to an individual or a team of up to three people. The award was established by the IEEE Board of Directors in 2002. The award is named after James L. Flanagan, who was a scientist from Bell Labs where he worked on acoustics for many years. Recipients of this award receive a bronze medal, certificate and honorarium. Gunnar Fant
Carl Gunnar Michael Fant (October 8, 1919 – June 6, 2009) was a leading researcher in speech science in general and speech synthesis in particular who spent most of his career as a professor at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. He was a first cousin of the actors and directors George Fant and Kenne Fant. Gunnar Fant received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from KTH in 1945. He specialized in the acoustics of the human voice, measuring formant values, and continued to work in this area at Ericsson and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also took the initiative of creating a speech communication department at KTH, unusual at the time. Fant's work led to the birth of a new era of speech synthesis with the introduction of powerful and configurable formant synthesizers. Frederick Jelinek
Frederick Jelinek (18 November 1932 – 14 September 2010) was a Czech-American researcher in information theory, automatic speech recognition, and natural language processing. He is well known for his oft-quoted statement, "Every time I fire a linguist, the performance of the speech recognizer goes up". Jelinek was born in Czechoslovakia before World War II and emigrated with his family to the United States in the early years of the communist regime. He studied engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and taught for 10 years at Cornell University before accepting a job at IBM Research. In 1961, he married Czech screenwriter Milena Jelinek. At IBM, his team advanced approaches to computer speech recognition and machine translation. Allen Gersho
Allen Gersho is a professor emeritus at UCSB who made significant contributions in the area of signal compression and speech coding. Gersho received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering at MIT in 1960. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University in 1963. From 1963 until 1980, he was a member of the technical staff in the research division of AT&T Bell Labs before joining UCSB as a professor in 1980. He took early retirement from UCSB in 1999 and was CEO of SignalCom, Inc from 1996 till 2000 when the company was sold to Microsoft. Victor Zue
Victor Waito Zue (born 1944) is a Chinese American computer scientist and professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1989 to 2001, he headed the Spoken Language Systems Group at the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science. The group pioneered the development of many systems enabling interactions between human and computers using spoken language.
