Jean-Jacques Kieffer
Jean-Jacques Kieffer (1857 in Guinkirchen – 1925 in Bitche) was a French naturalist and entomologist who specialised in the study of parasitic insects. Educated as a priest, Kieffer taught natural science in Bitche, Lorraine while working on the description and classification of insects. His work and publications later became a predominant source of description and classification for entomologists in the early 20th century, in particular with regard to parasitoid wasps, midges, and mosquitos. He collaborated with the English entomologist Peter Cameron. Kieffer received an honorary Doctor honoris causa degree from the University of Strasbourg in 1904. Gall Midge
Cecidomyiidae is a family of flies known as gall midges or gall gnats. As the name implies, the larvae of most gall midges feed within plant tissue, creating abnormal plant growths called galls. Cecidomyiidae are very fragile small insects usually only in length; many are less than long. They are characterised by hairy wings, unusual in the order Diptera, and have long antennae. Some Cecidomyiids are also known for the strange phenomenon of paedogenesis in which the larval stage reproduces without maturing first. In some species, the daughter larvae consume the mother, while in others, reproduction occurs later on in the egg or pupa. More than 6,650 species and 830 genera are described worldwide, though this is certainly an underestimate of the actual diversity of this family. A DNA barcoding study published in 2016 estimated the fauna of Canada alone to be in excess of 16,000 species, hinting at a staggering global count of over 1 million cecidomyiid species that have yet ...

Iteomyia Capreae
''Iteomyia capreae'' is a gall midge which forms galls on willows (''Salix'' species). It was first described by Johannes Winnertz Johannes Winnertz (11 February 1800 – 24 July 1890) was a German entomologist specialising in Diptera. He was a dealer in Krefeld. Works * ''Beitrag zur Kenntniss der Gattung Ceratopogon Meigen''. 1852 * ''Beitrag zu einer Monographie der G ... in 1853. Description of the gall The midge forms two different galls which can be found, either on the leaf bade or on a side-vein of a leaf. * in the leaf blade the gall is a hard, domed pouch above, and below it is conical, with a red-rimmed opening. The opening is hairless and initially greenish, later becoming yellow, brown, purple or red. It contains a single larva which is white at first and later orange or red. * the side-vein is a 2–3 mm long, hard swelling, containing the larva. When mature the larvae drop from the gall, overwintering in the soil and pupating in the spring. The gal ...

Iteomyia Major
''Iteomyia major'' is a gall midge which forms galls on willows (''Salix'' species). It was first described by Jean-Jacques Kieffer in 1889. Description of the gall The gall is a coalesced group of 2–10 hard round galls, on the midrib or side vein and are equally prominent on either side of the leaf. Each gall has a single larva, initially white and later orange or red. There is a single generation each year and pupation takes place in the soil. Females prefer to lay their eggs on the ″broad-leaf willows″ and the galls are found on sallows, or their hybrids, which include bay willow ( ''S. pentandra''), bitter willow ( ''S. elaeagnos''), dark-leaved willow ( ''S. myrsinifolia''), eared willow ( ''S. aurita''), goat willow ( ''S. caprea''), gray willow ( ''S. glauca''), grey willow ( ''S. cinerea), purple willow ( ''S. purpurea''), tea-leaved willow ( ''S. phylicifolia'') and woolly willow ( ''S. lanata''). Ephraim Porter Felt
Ephraim Porter Felt (January 7, 1868 – December 14, 1943) was an American entomologist who specialised in Diptera. Biography Ephraim Porter Felt was born in Salem, Massachusetts on January 7, 1868, to Charles Wilson Felt and Martha Seeth Ropes Felt. He was educated at Massachusetts Agricultural College, Boston University, and Cornell. From 1893 to 1895, Felt taught natural sciences at Clinton Liberal Institute. In 1895, he was appointed assistant to J.A. Lintner, the State Entomologist of New York. Following Lintner's death in 1898, Felt was appointed as State Entomologist and remained in that position until his retirement in 1928. In retirement he worked at Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories in Stamford, Connecticut, where he died from a heart attack on December 14, 1943. He married Helen Maria Otterson on June 24, 1896, and they had two children. Felt worked mostly with Nematocera, particularly Cecidomyiidae. However, as State Entomologist for New York, the scope of his ...

Carl Robert Osten-Sacken
Carl Robert Osten-Sacken or Carl-Robert Romanovich, Baron von der Osten-Sacken, Baron Osten Sacken (21 August 1828, – 20 May 1906) was a Russian diplomat and entomologist. He served as the Russian consul general in New York City during the American Civil War, living in the United States from 1856 to 1877. He worked on the taxonomy of flies in general and particularly of the family Tipulidae (crane flies). Early life Carl Robert Osten-Sacken was born on 21 August 1828 in St. Petersburg as the son of Baltic German Baron Reinhold Friedrich von der Osten-Sacken (1791-1864) and his wife, Elisabeth von Engelhardt (1805-1873). Biography He took an interest in insects at the age of eleven through the influence of Joseph N. Schatiloff, a Russian coleopterist. In 1849 he joined the Imperial Foreign Office and while still in Russia he published his first entomological papers, including an account of the species found in the suburbs of St. Petersburg. In 1856, he was sent to Was ...
