Israel was present at the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Munich, Germany. Their entry was "Hi"(Chai) ''Alive'', written by Ehud Manor, composed by the previous year's Israeli representative Avi Toledano, and performed by Ofra Haza. The song was selected through Israel's traditional national final, the ''Kdam Eurovision''. Bat-Sheva Ofra Haza ( he, בת-שבע עפרה חזה; 19 November 1957 – 23 February 2000), known as Ofra Haza (), was an Israeli singer, songwriter, actress, and Grammy Award-nominated recording artist commonly known in the Western world as " The Israeli Madonna", or "Madonna of the East". Portugal was represented by Armando Gama, with the song "Esta balada que te dou", at the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place in Munich on 23 April.
