Israel At The 2014 Olympics
Israel competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The team consisted of five athletes. Vladislav Bykanov was the first male athlete to qualify from Israel in short track speed skating. Competitors Alpine skiing According to the quota allocation released on January 20, 2014 Israel had qualified two athletes, however only one athlete was selected to compete. Virgile Vandeput missed both races he was entered in, as he was injured during training. Figure skating Three skaters qualified to represent Israel. Alexei Bychenko finished the men's singles competition in 21st out of 30 competitors. Andrea Davidovich and Evgeni Krasnopolski finished the pairs skating competition in 15th place out of 20 pairs. The Olympic Committee of Israel (Hebrew: הוועד האולימפי בישראל) is the recognized National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Israel, and the governing body of Olympic sports in Israel. The men's 1000 metres in short track speed skating at the 2014 Winter Olympics was held between 13–15 February 2014 at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi, Russia. The qualifying heats were held on 13 February with the quarterfinal, the semifinal and the final were held on 15 February. The 2010 Olympic Champion was Lee Jung-Su of South Korea, who did not run. The defending World Champion was Sin Da-woon, also of South Korea. He did not win a medal. Viktor Ahn and Vladimir Grigorev, both of Russia, won the gold and the silver medals, respectively. Sjinkie Knegt of the Netherlands became third. The medals of Ahn and Grigorev became the first ever gold and silver medals of Russia in short track speed skating, whereas the medal of Knegt became the first ever medal of the Netherlands in short track speed skating. The qualifying heats was held on 18 February with the quarterfinal, the semifinal and the final on 21 February. The defending Olympic Champion was Charles Hamelin of Canada, while the defending World Champion was Liang Wenhao of China. None of them won a medal. Viktor Ahn of Russia won the race, getting the third individual medal in short track speed skating at the same Olympics (two golds and one bronze) and thus replicating his own performance at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Evgeni Krasnopolski ( he, יבגני קרסנופולסקי ukr, Євгеній Краснопольський; born 4 October 1988) is a Ukrainian-born Israeli retired pair skater. Krasnopolski and Andrea Davidovich were the first pair representing Israel to qualify for Israel at the 2014 Olympics. They finished 15th in Sochi. Krasnopolski competed with Danielle Montalbano from 2009 to 2012. He competed for Israel at the 2018 Winter Olympics with Paige Conners in figure skating in pairs skating and a team event in Pyeongchang, South Korea. He and Hailey Kops competed at the 2021 CS Nebelhorn Trophy and qualified to compete for Israel at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Andrea "Anya" Davidovich (born March 24, 1997) is a former competitive pair skater. She and Evgeni Krasnopolski were the first pair representing Israel to qualify for an Olympics. They finished 15th in Sochi. Anya is currently a student at New York University studying computer science. Early life Davidovich was born on March 24, 1997, in Burlington, Vermont. She was raised in New Jersey and is a dual citizen of the United States and Israel. Career Early career Prior to 2010, Davidovich was a member of Essex Skating Club in West Orange, New Jersey, USA. In 2008, she teamed up with Ivan Gyliaev, who had been training in Russia, and they skated together in the Nutcracker Theatre On Ice.
