Israel At The 2006 Winter Olympics
Israel competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Five Israeli athletes participated in the games, the same as in Salt Lake City in 2002, including two ice dance couples: Galit Chait and Sergei Sakhnovski, who were taking part for the third time in the Olympics, and the brother and sister team of Alexandra and Roman Zaretski for whom this was the first Olympics. The fifth member of the team was an alpine skier, Mikail Renzhin, the first Israeli to participate in this sport in the Olympics. He competed in the men's slalom and giant slalom events. Galit Chait was the flag-bearer in the opening ceremony, as she was in 2002. Galit Chait
Galit Chait ( he, גלית חייט, ''Galit Hayat''; born on January 29, 1975) is an Israeli former competitive ice dancer. She and her partner Sergei Sakhnovski competed internationally for Israel from 1995 to 2006, becoming the 2002 World bronze medalists. Personal life Chait was born in Israel. Her family moved to New Jersey when she was young, and she first skated at age 8. Her father, Boris Chait, has been president of the Israeli Ice Skating Federation since 2002. On August 23, 2008, Chait married former Italian military policeman Francesco Moracci in New Jersey and then on September 13, 2008 they had a second wedding in Florence, Italy. The two had met at the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino, Italy, where Moracci was a member of the security detail assigned to protect the Israeli team. 2006 Winter Olympics
The 2006 Winter Olympics, officially the XX Olympic Winter Games ( it, XX Giochi olimpici invernali) and also known as Torino 2006, were a winter multi-sport event held from 10 to 26 February 2006 in Turin, Italy. This marked the second time Italy had hosted the Winter Olympics, the first being in 1956 in Cortina d'Ampezzo; Italy had also hosted the Summer Olympics in 1960 in Rome. Turin was selected as the host city for the 2006 Games in June 1999. The official motto of Torino 2006 was "Passion lives here". The Games' logo depicted a stylized profile of the Mole Antonelliana building, drawn in white and blue ice crystals, signifying the snow and the sky. Sergei Sakhnovski
Sergei Sakhnovski ( he, סרגיי סחנובסקי, russian: Серге́й Сахно́вский; born May 15, 1975) is an Israeli ice dancer. With partner Galit Chait, he is the 2002 World bronze medalist for Israel. With previous partner Ekaterina Svirina, he is the 1993 World Junior champion for Russia. Career Sakhnovski began skating at age four and took up ice dancing when he was eight. Early in his career, he skated with Marina Anissina and Ekaterina Svirina. With Svirina, he won the World Junior Championships in 1993 and took the silver medal in 1994. He teamed up with Galit Chait in 1995. They initially trained in Russia with Ludmila Buytskova and Elena Maslenikova and then moved to Monsey, New York. Alpine Skiing At The 2006 Winter Olympics – Men's Giant Slalom
The giant slalom is conducted in two runs, with emphasis on manoeuvering rather than speed as the gates are fairly close together – but not as close as in slalom. The giant slalom also promotes endurance, with the primary difference between it and the slalom competition being the length of the course - the difference in level in giant slalom is 300 to 450 metres, while in slalom it is between 180 and 220 metres. This also leads to the gates being further apart in giant slalom. The men's giant slalom took place on 20 February.
