Isola Vicentina
Isola Vicentina is a small town and ''comune'' in the Italy, Italian province of Vicenza in the Veneto region. Its population is around 9,319. History Numerous archeological finds from various epochs bear witness to the ancient past of Isola Vicentina. These finds include pottery dating back to the Iron Age, a column with an inscription in a Venetic, Venetian language, a Ancient Rome, Roman tombstone, and several Lombards, Lombardic tombs. It is evident from these discoveries that the territory where Isola Vicentina now lies was already very important in very ancient times. This was due mainly to its geographical position along important roads to Vicenza and Schio. The earliest written record in which we find Isola Vicentina mentioned dates back to 753 A.D. During the Middle Ages, the territory was owned first by the bishop, later by the Conti family (until the twelfth century), and finally by the Da Vivaro family. The area was r ... Senglea
Senglea ( mt, L-Isla ), also known by its title Città Invicta (or Civitas Invicta), is a fortified city in the South Eastern Region of Malta. It is one of the Three Cities in the Grand Harbour area, the other two being Cospicua and Vittoriosa, and has a population of approximately 2,720 people. The city's title Città Invicta was given because it managed to resist the Ottoman invasion at the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The name Senglea comes from the Grand Master who built it Claude de la Sengle and gave the city a part of his name. While Senglea is the 52nd most populated locality on the island, due to its incredibly small land area, it is the 2nd most densely populated locality after Sliema. History During the time of the Knights of St. John, Senglea was also used as a hunting area, and was known as ''L'Isola di San Giuliano''. In 1311 St. Julian's church or chapel was founded in Isola. This was the first building to be constructed on what later became Senglea. On 8 ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

It is a ''frazione'' of the ''comune'' of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, and is the only inhabited island on the lake, with a current population of 35. History St Francis of Assisi lived 40 days on this island as a hermit during Lent (probably 1211 although the date is unsure). The 12th century Church of Saint Michael the Archangel was built on the top of the hill. The island's only town reached its height in the 14th century, after the establishment of a Franciscan Monastery in 1328. Most of the towns buildings date from this period. By the 1800s the town had a population of 700 and was in decline. The Guglielmi Castle was built in the 1880s on the site of the monastery, but has since fallen into disrepair. The castle was in the process of being turned into a luxury resort and spa, but in 2010 the company declared bankruptcy. From the end of February 1944 until 18 June 1944 ...
