Isles Of The Sea GAA
Isles of the Sea GAA (Irish: ''Inse na Mara'' ) was a Gaelic Athletic Association gaelic football club in the Ringsend area of County Dublin, Ireland. History The club was founded in the late 1880s in the very early years of the GAA. The Dublin Senior Football Championship was won on three occasions (1890, 1895 and 1901) and players from the club backboned the Dublin team that won the 1901 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship on 2 August 1903. The club first won the championship in 1890 beating Young Irelands 0-5 to 0-0 in the final, captained by Charlie Thompson. The captain for the second win in 1895 was Tommy Dunne. In the 1901 Dublin final, Isles of the Sea, captained by Dan Holland, defeated Kickhams and the club was awarded the Dublin senior championship cup to keep permanently and the cup is now in the museum in Collins Barracks near Heuston station. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. The Dublin Senior Football Championship (currently known for sponsorship reasons as the '' Go-Ahead'' Dublin Senior Football Championship) is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition between the top Dublin GAA clubs. The winners of the Dublin Championship qualify to represent their county in the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship, the winners of which progress to the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. Sam Maguire
Samuel Maguire (11 March 1877 – 6 February 1927) was an Irish republican and Gaelic football player. He is chiefly remembered as the eponym of the Sam Maguire Cup, given to the All-Ireland Senior Champions of Gaelic football each year. Early life He was born in the townland of Mallabraca near the town of Dunmanway in West Cork on 1877 and was a member of the Anglo-Catholic Church of Ireland. He was the son of farmer John Maguire and Jane Kingston. He had four brothers and two sisters. Willie was the eldest then Mary, Jack, Dick, Paul (who married a Roman Catholic and whose son became a Roman Catholic priest), Sam and Elizabeth. The Maguires farmed of land. Valentine Harris (Irish: ''Vailintín Ó hEarchaí''; 23 June 1884 in Ringsend, Dublin, Ireland – 9 November 1963), commonly referred to as Val Harris, was an Irish footballer who played Gaelic football for the Dublin county team and soccer for, among others Shelbourne, Everton and Ireland. Harris was regarded as one of the finest soccer players of his generation and in 1906 became the first Shelbourne player capped by Ireland. He still remains the club's most capped player. In 1913 he captained the first Ireland team to beat England and in 1914 he was a member of the Ireland team that won the British Home Championship. Harris has been described as an extremely hard player in the mode of Kevin Moran or Paul McGrath and like his Shelbourne, Everton and Ireland teammate, Bill Lacey, he was also very versatile, covering just about every outfield position during his career. Jackie Mooney
Jackie Mooney (1938 – 30 December 2017) was an Irish soccer player during the 1960s and 1970s. Mooney played for Shamrock Rovers, Athlone Town and Bohemians amongst others during his career in the League of Ireland. Club career Jackie was spotted playing for Home Farm by Billy Behan in 1955 and joined Manchester United. After 3 years at the club however, Mooney left Old Trafford without making the breakthrough. He had short spells at Bangor City and Cork Hibernians before signing for Shamrock Rovers where he made a scoring debut, against Shels in Dalymount Park on 22 August 1962. He scored for Rovers in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup against Valencia C.F. in the Estadio Mestalla in 1963.
