Isis Central, Queensland
Isis Central is a rural locality in the Bundaberg Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Isis Central had a population of 205 people. History The locality takes its name from the Isis River, which in turn was named by mine owner William Howard who lived in the area from 1862. Howard named it after the Isis River in England, a tributary of the River Thames. In 1894, local sugarcane growers decided to raise funds to build the Isis Central Sugar Mill. The Queensland Government approved the construction of the mill, costing £26,000 and Walkers Limited were engaged to build the mill. The first crushing began on Tuesday 7 September 1897. Isis Central Mill Provisional School opened on 23 January 1899. It became Isis Central Mill State School on 1 January 1909. It closed on 11 December 1987. Walkers Limited
Walkers Limited was an Australian engineering company, based in Maryborough, Queensland. It built ships and railway locomotives. The Walkers factory still produces railway locomotives and rolling stock as part of Downer Rail. History In 1863 John Walker and three friends set up the ''Union Foundry'' of John Walker & Co in Ballarat. In 1867 a branch was opened in Maryborough. The Ballarat assets were disposed of in 1879 and in 1884, the business became a limited company under the title ''John Walker & Co Limited'', being renamed ''Walkers Limited'' in 1888. The company produced most of the parts for machinery at sugar mills. In 1980 Walkers Limited was sold to Evans Deakin Industries. It was included in the purchase of Evans Deakin by Downer Group in March 2001 and today the Maryborough factory continues to operate as part of Downer Rail. Isis Central Sugar Mill
Isis Central Sugar Mill is a sugar cane mill at Kevin Livingstone Drive, Isis Central, Bundaberg Region of Queensland, Australia. Isis Central Sugar Mill produces raw sugar, molasses and electricity. History Isis Sugar Central Mill was founded in 1896 as an alternative to other sugar mills in the region operated by CSR Limited. Isis was founded as a company limited by guarantee and remains wholly owned by its shareholders, which is limited to farmers who supply sugar cane to the mill. In 2012 the mill had its largest ever season, with 1,505,400 tonnes of cane crushed in a single season for the production of 223,874 tonnes of raw sugar. In 2019 the mill owners had approve a proposal from a Pakistani group called Almoiz, in which Almoiz was to hold a majority of the shares in the mill and was to invest $35 million for upgrades of the mill. The Isis River is a river in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland, Australia. Formed by the confluence of the Smith and Sarahana Creeks, the river rises east of Childers and flows in an easterly direction where it joins the Burrum River, south of . Not far from its junction with the Isis River, the Burrum and the Gregory River form a confluence and empty into the Coral Sea at Burrum Heads. The river descends over its course.
