Isfjorden (Svalbard)
Isfjorden is the second longest fjord in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. It lies on the west side of Spitsbergen, an island in the Arctic Ocean about midway between Norway and the North Pole, and the largest in the archipelago. The mountain of Alkhornet stands on the northern side of the entrance to the fjord, as does the coastal plain of Daudmannsøyra. A portion of Isfjorden is included in the national parks of Norway as Nordre Isfjorden Land National Park. Around the fjord lie many of the largest settlements in Svalbard: Barentsburg, Longyearbyen (on the Adventfjorden) and Pyramiden. History A Basque whaling ship from San Sebastian, under the command of Juan de Erauso and piloted by the Englishman Nicholas Woodcock, was the first to establish a temporary whaling station here in 1612. In 1613 French, Basque, and Dutch whaling ships resorted to Safehaven (Trygghamna) on the north side of Isford or in Green Harbour on the south side of the fjord. All were either dr ...

Isfjord Radio
Isfjord Radio is a coast radio station, weather station and hotel located at Kapp Linné on the island Spitsbergen in Svalbard, Norway. The station was established in 1933, and has played an important role in the telecommunications between the Svalbard archipelago and the outside world. The station was destroyed by both sides during World War II, and rebuilt in 1946. The station was important for ships traffic and air traffic. Satellite communications were established in 1979, but deprecated when a fiber optic cable between Svalbard and the mainland was finished in 2004. Isfjord Radio was automated and depopulated in 1999. Parts of the outdated installations have been preserved as a historical site. Ice Fjord
Ice Fjord is a bay long and wide, entered between Weddell Point and Kade Point along the south coast and near the west end of South Georgia Island. The name is well established, dating back to about 1920. A number of features along the bay's coast, including several smaller bays, have been charted and named. During a visit to South Georgia in 1911–12, Scottish geologist David Ferguson named two bays within Ice Fjord as North and South Bays. Since both of these names were well established for the two arms of Prince Olav Harbor, the bays were renamed in 1957 by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC). wide North Bay was renamed Narval Bay after the whale catcher ''Narval'', while South Bay was renamed Miles Bay, after the whale catcher ''Don Miles'', both of which were owned by the Compañía Argentina de Pesca. Morsa Bay is a small bay east of Weddell Point, first surveyed by the South Georgia Survey in the period 1951–57, and named by the UK-APC for the ...
